Thursday was the annual media day for the Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams. All Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine players and coaches got together for team photos and the Rainbow Warriors’ players broke away for individual and group shots and interviews. The Rainbow Wahine held their first full practice on Wednesday. The Rainbow Warriors get going on Saturday. The UH men, under fifth-year coach Eran Ganot, open their season Nov. 8 vs. Florida A&M in the Rainbow Classic. The […]
March memories were bitter and sweet at the same time for Myrrah Joseph. The UH women’s basketball forward tasted the composite all offseason. Coming as close as the Rainbow Wahine did without making the NCAA tournament will do that. Upstart UH was about a quarter away from stunning heavily favored UC Davis in the Big West championship game at the Honda Center before losing the lead and the game, 58-50. The Rainbow Wahine got to unleash that feeling in the […]
Most of the Hawaii women’s basketball schedule was teased last week, but the full reveal came Thursday afternoon. UH opens it up at home — the second straight year it has done so after going on the road every year under Laura Beeman — on Sept. 5 against San Diego State. Highlights include home dates against North Carolina State and Texas in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown (Nov. 29-Dec.1) and a road trip to play Oregon State and Washington (Dec. 6 and […]
Hawaii women’s basketball fans anxiously awaiting the release of the Rainbow Wahine’s 2019-20 schedule were thrown a bone on Friday morning. The Wahine basketball Twitter account put out a graphic of the schedule … but obscured with fog. The official 2019-2020 schedule for #HawaiiWBB…. or is it? Can you make out who we’re playing this season? #GoTheDistance pic.twitter.com/9gNcanQwww — Hawai‘i Women's Basketball (@HawaiiWBB) August 30, 2019 It was possible to make out most of the nonconference opponents on the left-hand […]
The window to living her dream opened at least a little bit more for Shannon Nishi-Patton when she swept her five karate matches at the Pan Am Games and won a gold medal Saturday. But Nishi-Patton still doesn’t know how close she is to making it to Tokyo when karate will debut as an exhibition sport at the 2020 Olympic Games. The former Team USA assistant coach from Honolulu came out of a five-year retirement as a competitor in 2017. […]
“We can hardly wait to get out on our new floor, it is going to be something,” University of Hawaii women’s basketball coach Laura Beeman said today as workers have begun the refinishing of the Stan Sheriff Center court. The floor that the Rainbow Wahine and Rainbow Warriors basketball teams call home was last resurfaced nearly 20 years ago. The Stan Sheriff Center itself is about to enter its 25th year of athletics. The approximately $90,000 project is scheduled to […]
Behind three former Hawaii Rainbow Wahine, American Samoa ended the 2019 Pacific Games the same way it started competition — by winning with authority. Sarah Toeaina poured in 29 points on 9-for-14 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead her adopted team to a 74-53 win over Fiji on Wednesday night in Samoa (Tuesday in Hawaii). Lahni and Leah Salanoa added a combined 21 points and nine rebounds for the U.S. territory. American Samoa (5-0) swept through the Olympic-style competition between […]
The Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball programs undertook significant upgrades of their respective Stan Sheriff Center locker rooms in the 2019 offseason. While the Rainbow Warriors’ new digs are said to be done (and could be showcased in the coming days), those of the Rainbow Wahine still require some work for completion before next season. Both hoops programs have fundraised independently for the locker upgrades; no money was directed to the projects from UH’s haul from the state legislature. Athletic […]
