Rainbow Wahine take defensive stance to CSU

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 13, 2014

Defense was a recurring theme in Laura Beeman’s postgame comments following the Rainbow Wahine basketball team’s exhibition win over Hawaii Hilo on Oct. 29. She’s maintained that emphasis over the two weeks leading up to Friday’s season opener at Colorado State. “After Hilo, we haven’t stopped defensive practices,” UH senior Shawna-Lei Kuehu said. Beeman opens her third season as head coach by leading the Wahine into Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo. for a matchup with Mountain West Conference favorite […]

Wahine basketball: Thinking Big

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 30, 2014

Size and depth were the most notable additions to the Hawaii women’s basketball team’s roster in the offseason and the Rainbow Wahine didn’t waste much time in utilizing both in Wednesday’s exhibition game against Hawaii Hilo. The Wahine worked the ball to 6-foot-4 center Connie Morris on three of their first four possessions. On the first two she passed out to Ashleigh Karaitiana and Destiny King who hit open jumpers. The third time she touched the ball, Morris finished with […]

Karaitiana gives Rainbow Wahine a triple threat

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 27, 2014

Ashleigh Karaitiana was describing the role she envisions for her senior season when Shawna-Lei Kuehu, sitting to her left in the Stan Sheriff Center green room, interjected. “Ashleigh’s going to be a triple-threat,” Kuehu said. “She’s going to have the drive, the shot and the defense.” Karaitiana did much of her scoring in threes in Sunday’s Green vs. White scrimmage while posting a team-high 18 points before a crowd of about 1,000 that stuck around after the Rainbow Wahine volleyball […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 25, 2014

After the completion of the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team’s match Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center, basketball steps into the spotlight as coach Laura Beeman’s team makes its public debut with its Green vs. White scrimmage. The scrimmage will be an extension of practice as well as a dress rehearsal for the Wahine as they head toward Wednesday’s exhibition game against UH-Hilo. “We’re going to work,” Beeman said. “We’re going to work on conditioning. We’re going to work on chemistry […]

Wahine basketball: UH second in Big West preseason poll

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 22, 2014

A lofty placement in the Big West preseason media poll could make the Rainbow Wahine basketball team a target for the rest of the conference this season — precisely the scenario Laura Beeman envisioned when she took over as head coach. The Rainbow Wahine were picked second in the preseason poll released on Wednesday, trailing only defending conference champion Cal State Northridge. UH received one first-place vote with the other 13 going to the Matadors. “It just raises our expectations […]

Laura Beeman Call the Coach recap

By Brian McInnis on October 21, 2014

Since taking the Hawaii job prior to the 2012-13 season, Rainbow Wahine basketball coach Laura Beeman has earned the reputation amongst the local media as a forthright, solid interview. Her hour on KKEA 1420-AM Tuesday night with Wahine play-by-play man Dave Kawada for the “Call the Coach Show” might have been some of her best Q&A in the islands to date. While on the stage at the Rumours Night Club at the Ala Moana Hotel, Beeman fielded a wide range […]
