High praise for Rainbow Wahine hoops

By Jason Kaneshiro on December 1, 2014

Hawaii’s Laura Beeman had company among coaches complementing the Rainbow Wahine basketball team’s efforts over the weekend. Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer and North Carolina’s Sylvia Hatchell — both members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame with more than 1,800 wins between team — offered praise for the Wahine (4-3) after their teams held off UH’s upset bids in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Shootout. “I was very impressed with not only their team but the excellent coaching,” VanDerveer […]

Expectations are rising for the Rainbow Wahine basketball team. So although Hawaii opened the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Shootout with a 14-point win on Friday, there wasn’t a celebratory tone in head coach Laura Beeman’s postgame comments. “It really comes down to when you want to be great, things aren’t going to be easy,” Beeman said after a 72-58 win over Prairie View A&M. “You have to work through every game, even when they’re tough you can’t lower your […]

The team has a two-hour practice scheduled for Thanksgiving morning, its last full workout in preparation for the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Shootout. The Wahine will later join the other three teams in town — North Carolina, Prairie View A&M and Stanford — at a banquet hosted by the tournament sponsor then spend some time with family […]

Rainbow Wahine Classic games delayed

An elevator malfunction pushed back the start of the final night of the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic on Sunday. The Missouri women’s basketball team’s arrival at the Stan Sheriff Center was delayed when members of the team got stuck on a hotel elevator. The Tigers were on their way to the lobby of the Waikiki Beach Marriott when the elevator doors didn’t open, trapping them inside for close to 90 minutes, according to Missouri’s media relations director. The […]

Wahine basketball: Let it snow

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 18, 2014

Morgan Mason’s first snowfall helped the Hawaii point guard keep her cool when the tension rose on Sunday. Mason grew up in Southern California and hadn’t seen snow until the Rainbow Wahine basketball team arrived in Colorado for their season opener last week. “I was just outside playing like a little kid, throwing the snow around, rolling in it like no care in the world,” she said. Mason said UH coach Laura Beeman told the Wahine to remember that carefree […]

Breathtaking win for Rainbow Wahine

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 15, 2014

With Colorado’s thin air in mind, Laura Beeman pushed the Rainbow Wahine basketball team through drills “without oxygen” leading up to the season opener. To prepare for the altitude, Beeman and the UH coaches gave the Wahine reduced recovery time between conditioning and shooting drills in the practices leading up to the season-opening road trip to Colorado State and Denver. The workout plan paid off on Friday when the Wahine weathered the adjustment to the altitude while taking an early […]
