Wahine road trip heads to UC Davis

By Jason Kaneshiro on January 8, 2016

After ending a run of opening-game futility in conference play on Thursday, the Rainbow Wahine basketball team takes a couple of streaks into Saturday’s Big West contest at UC Davis. The Wahine started their conference schedule at 1-0 for the first time since 2006 with Thursday’s 67-55 win at Long Beach State. The victory was also their sixth straight on the road this season and 15th consecutive Big West regular-season win going back to last season. Both streaks figure to […]

Wahine “Hoopla” sold out

By Jason Kaneshiro on December 16, 2015

Hours before a fundraiser to support the Rainbow Wahine basketball program, coach Laura Beeman was already “overwhelmed” by the response the event had received. According to the Wahine Basketball Hoopla web site, tickets for today’s event at Hukilau Honolulu are sold out with the proceeds to benefit the UH women’s program. “It’s just a tremendous, overwhelming show of support,” Beeman said after today’s practice. “If you would have asked me year one if this was going to happen, I’d be […]

Wahine open North Shore road trip

By Jason Kaneshiro on December 3, 2015

The Rainbow Wahine basketball team opens its shortest “road trip” of the season by taking on BYU today in the front end of a two-game stay on the North Shore. “It’s not our home court, but it’s definitely not 2,500 miles,” UH coach Laura Beeman said earlier this week. The Rainbow Wahine (4-3) drove out to Laie on Wednesday and face BYU (3-3) today at 6 p.m. in the Tom Weston Classic at BYU Hawaii’s Cannon Activities Center. They’ll take […]

Rainbow Wahine Shootout opens today

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 27, 2015

Even with games against two nationally ranked opponents looming this weekend, Rainbow Wahine basketball coach Laura Beeman wasn’t all that concerned about the team looking past its opening game of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Shootout today at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Wahine (3-1) open against CSU Bakersfield (1-2) at 5 p.m. before taking on No. 16 Arizona State on Saturday and No. 2 South Carolina on Sunday. UH dropped a game at CSU Bakersfield last December […]

Wahine Gameday: Kennedy eager for home debut

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 20, 2015

Brianna Kennedy will face a familiar opponent in her debut at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Wahine center sat out last year after transferring at Loyola Marymount and will take the floor against the Lions in UH’s home opener today in the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic. “I have a lot of good friends who still play for LMU, so it’ll be fun to play against them,” Kennedy said after Thursday’s practice at the Sheriff Center, “but also […]

Warrior World extra: Sarah Toeaina

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 19, 2015

For Sarah Toeaina, waiting was often the hardest part. A hamstring injury sidetracked a promising start to Toeaina’s freshman year with the Rainbow Wahine basketball team, keeping her out of the first nine games of the Big West schedule. The UH training staff worked to get her back on the court for the second half of the conference schedule, but even then she was fighting through pain in her leg. After UH ended a 23-9 season in the WNIT, she […]
