Most of the Big West Conference postseason awards announced today made sense. In this writer’s opinion, there was one clear exception to that. Big West freshman of the year, Terrell Gomez. Gomez received the award (which would’ve been UH’s second in that category, after Isaac Fotu co-won it in 2012-13) based on voting from the league’s nine head coaches. In my mind — and maybe I’m a little biased, but I don’t think I’m off base here — it clearly should’ve […]
Round and round the Big West free for all goes. The BWC remains as tight as ever near the conference midpoint, with six teams at or within a half game of first place — UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine. Irvine helped muddle an already congested race on Wednesday, winning at the Pyramid. UH (13-6, 4-2) is tied in for fewest losses with Davis and UCSB heading into today’s 5 p.m. (HST) […]
Five in a row? That’s what the Hawaii basketball team must accomplish if it is to remain in first place in the Big West Conference after tonight. With Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara hovering just behind UH at two losses each, the Rainbow Warriors have to keep taking care of business at home to remain in the pole position coming up on the league halfway mark. UH (13-5, 4-1 BWC) should be back to full strength with Brocke […]
Sarah Toeaina’s clutch performance resulted in her second career Big West player of the week honor. Toeaina got the nod today, a day after she hit the game-winning free throws in Hawaii’s 64-63 overtime win over San Diego in the Rainbow Wahine Bank of Hawaii Classic. UH (3-1) needed all of Toeaina’s 20 points against the Toreros (3-1); she had a number of big buckets late. She averaged 18.0 points and 5.0 rebounds, and shot 15-for-29 (51.7 percent) in UH’s […]
The 2017-18 preseason has been all about resisting attrition for the Rainbow Wahine basketball team. That was on display Friday night, as UH put on its women’s Green and White intrasquad scrimmage at the Stan Sheriff Center and suited up only 11 players. That meant there was only one available substitute at any point during three eight-minute periods of 5-on-5 play. “No. 1, I want to stay healthy. I think that’s what every coach wants in the preseason,” said UH […]
Big West women’s basketball coaches and media expect Hawaii to creep back toward conference contention in 2017-18. UH was sixth 12-18 (7-9 BWC) in 2016-17, with a host of young players. But the Rainbow Wahine were selected fourth in both the BWC preseason polls (coaches and media) announced Wednesday morning. Defending regular-season champ UC Davis and Cal State Northridge were tabbed as UH’s primary challenges to return to the pinnacle the Wahine achieved in 2016. Senior Sarah Toeaina is expected […]
The Rainbow Wahine basketball team got off to a running start in their first full practice of the new season. Laura Beeman set the tone and pace early in the opening practice of her sixth season as head coach Monday afternoon in UH’s Gym 2. “We started out practice with a lot of transition, getting up and down the floor, working our conditioning,” Beeman said. “We have to get up and down the floor this year, so everyone’s got to […]
The University of Hawaii women’s basketball season will open with homecoming week for a handful of Rainbow Wahine players. UH released the 2017-18 Wahine basketball schedule on Wednesday and the season-opening road trip heads to the Pacific Northwest for matchups at Portland on Nov. 10 and Seattle on Nov. 12. The front end of the trip will take sophomore guard Julissa Tago back to Oregon, where she was a standout at South Medford High School. The state of Washington is […]
