UH looks to posts post-Toeaina

By Brian McInnis on November 1, 2018

The size disparity will almost certainly not be as glaring as it was on Thursday, when Hawaii was head and shoulders above Hawaii Hilo in a preseason exhibition at the Stan Sheriff Center. But UH thinks it has something it can turn to in the post-Sarah Toeaina chapter of Rainbow Wahine basketball — posts. The Rainbow Wahine tuned up for their 2018-19 season opener by towering over the overmatched Vulcans, 62-26, in front of a smattering of fans and other onlookers […]

Wahine tabbed fifth, sixth in Big West

By Brian McInnis on October 24, 2018

The Hawaii women’s basketball team has some work to do to build its way back up to respectability around the Big West. UH, coming off an eighth-place season (12-18 overall, 5-11 BWC), was picked to finish fifth by the coaches and sixth by the media among nine teams in the league’s preseason polls announced Wednesday. “Based on last year and what we lost, yep, that’s about what I expected,” seventh-year coach Laura Beeman messaged Hawaii Warrior World. Defending regular-season champ […]

Wahine roll out 2018-19 team at scrimmage

By Brian McInnis on October 21, 2018

It was no subs allowed at the Hawaii women’s basketball 2018-19 preseason Green and White scrimmage on Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center. Ten healthy players meant those 10 were going the distance of two 10-minute periods of 5-on-5 action (plus an impromptu five-minute overtime period) in the first real look that fans had at this year’s Rainbow Wahine. Fifty or more diehards appeared to greet the team. Seventh-year coach Laura Beeman said the quality of play was “a little […]

Wahine size diminished before season

By Brian McInnis on October 18, 2018

The Hawaii women’s basketball team is parting ways with two of its tallest players at the outset of the 2018-19 season. A pair of 6-foot-3 players, Mackenzie Clinch Hoycard and Taylor Donohue, will not be available. The two were tied for second-tallest on the team, behind sophomore center Lauren Rewers. UH announced Thursday that Clinch Hoycard, a native Australian, is returning home prior to her sophomore season. In a UH release, Clinch Hoycard said, “I valued my time here at […]

Wahine hoops reeling ’em in

By Brian McInnis on October 9, 2018

If you’re a basketball player and you’ve got a college commitment to announce, Twitter is very much the place to do it these days. On Tuesday, the fourth — fourth — girls hoops player of the offseason/preseason announced a verbal commitment to join the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine for 2019-20. It was Naenae Calhoun, a 5-foot-4 point guard at JW North High in Riverside, Calif. Her full name is Tyzajahanae Fuller-Calhoun. I am proud to say I have verbally comitted to the University […]

Wahine hoops schedule released

By Brian McInnis on August 29, 2018

Well, this is new. For the first time in her seven-year Hawaii coaching career, Laura Beeman will open a regular season … at home. So it was revealed in the 2018-19 Hawaii women’s basketball schedule announced Wednesday. UH hosts Pepperdine on Nov. 6 — on the new, earlier NCAA-approved start date for all schools — at the Stan Sheriff Center, as part of a 16-game home schedule that includes Pac-12 powerhouse Stanford (Nov. 25). I am excited about our 2018-2019 schedule! This […]

Wahine fall in final tour game

By Brian McInnis on August 17, 2018

Go The Distance tour perfection was on the line on Saturday for the Hawaii women’s basketball team. It came up a bit short. The ATC Academy bested the Rainbow Wahine 55-41 in Sydney, as sophomore guard Jadynn Alexander was the only Wahine player in double figures, with 10 points. Yet UH headed home with a winning record, 3-1, having bested NZ Premiere North, NZ Premiere South, and Diamond Valley of SEABL over the last 10 days. In the loss, Lahni […]

Game 3 sprees

By Brian McInnis on August 15, 2018

Game 3 was good to both the Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams on Wednesday night (Tuesday back home) in their respective foreign tours. The Rainbow Warriors put together their best effort of their Down Under tour for a 70-52 win over the Centre of Excellence — the former academy of UH freshmen Mate Colina and Owen Hulland — in the Australian capital of Canberra. Colina scored 14 points in his homecoming, while point guard Drew Buggs added 11. Here’s the link […]
