Wins proving hard to come by

By Brian McInnis on November 24, 2018

There were a couple moments when it looked like the Hawaii women’s basketball team could rally all the way back from 22 points down against Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday. Those moments were either followed by a turnover or some other sort of missed opportunity, or just came plain too late. FCGU held on to win 73-67 on the second day of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown. UH (1-6) continues to be frustrated in its nonconference schedule heading into Sunday’s 2:30 […]

Wahine get on the board

By Brian McInnis on November 18, 2018

At last, the Hawaii women’s basketball team followed up on its principles in a winnable game. In a battle of winless teams, the Rainbow Wahine closed out Seattle University for a 67-51 victory on the final day of the Bank of Hawaii Classic on Sunday afternoon at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH (1-4) was in the game late in each of its first four games, but withered each time to start with four losses for only the third time in […]

Wrong kind of rare record for Wahine

By Warrior World on November 16, 2018

Going into Friday, there were only two 0-4 starts to a season in Hawaii women’s basketball history. The first was 1976-77 — the third season of official play — under Patsy Dung. UH finished 4-4 that year, winning its last four games (three vs. Willamette). The second was 2008-09, when UH dropped its first six in Jim Bolla’s final season as coach. The Rainbow Wahine were 3-16 at one point in that season marred by the infamous kicking incident in practice […]

Wahine high on big signing class

By Brian McInnis on November 15, 2018

The Hawaii women’s basketball team bolstered its ranks considerably with the 2019 early signing period. Four of the players were mentioned on Warrior World previously. Those four are all incoming freshmen. They are: >> Nae Nae Calhoun, a 5-4 point guard out of JW North (Calif.) High >> Olivia Davies, a 5-9 combo guard out of Wasilla (Alaska) High >> MaKayla Edwards, a 5-10 guard/forward out of Salesian College (Calif.) Prep >> Kasey Neubert, a 6-0 forward out of Highlands […]

Wahine drop to 0-3 for first time in decade

By Warrior World on November 11, 2018

Another winnable game, another early-season loss for the Hawaii women’s basketball team. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 0-3 for the first time since 2008-09 — Jim Bolla’s final season as coach — with a 58-50 loss at San Diego on Sunday afternoon. Seventh-year coach Laura Beeman noticed immediately a different energy than from her team’s two one-point losses to begin the season. “Right from the jump,” she said in a postgame phone interview from Jenny Craig Pavilion. “We had a couple players […]

Wahine burned again in final seconds

By Warrior World on November 9, 2018

It was a different site but the same result for the Hawaii women’s basketball team. The Rainbow Wahine rallied from nine points down in the fourth quarter at San Diego State to take a lead on Leah Salanoa’s free throws with 1:27 left, but SDSU’s Tea Adams drove for the go-ahead basket with 7.1 seconds left and UH was off the mark on its final possession in a 58-57 afternoon loss at Viejas Arena. UH, which dropped to 0-2 for […]

Beeman: ‘We’ll be more than OK’ after opening loss

By Brian McInnis on November 7, 2018

Pepperdine guard Paige Fecske sprinted along the baseline, came around a curl and launched a stop-and-pop 3 that circled the rim and dropped through with 10 seconds left, a successful designed play by the trailing (now leading) Waves coming out of a timeout. Hawaii was unable to respond in kind — its play after timeout was busted and newcomer Savannah Reier had the best option remaining, a tough mid-range leaner that came up short with about five or four seconds […]

2018-19 Rainbow Wahine basketball preview

By Brian McInnis on November 6, 2018

The Hawaii women’s basketball team hopes to reverse course beginning tonight against Pepperdine to launch the 2018-19 season. UH, 12-18 the last two seasons, lost top scorer Sarah Toeaina but has its Nos. 2 through 9 scorers back. Here’s what ran in today’s print edition of the Star-Advertiser, as seventh-year coach Laura Beeman resolved her team would be better this season. The Wahine are counting on versatility as a strong suit this season. “We’ve got a lot of different lineups […]
