Point guard Tia Kanoa graciously accepted the first Big West weekly award given to the Hawaii women’s basketball team in the 2018-19 season. The Monday honor went to Kanoa after she played huge all over the floor in the Rainbow Wahine’s 65-60 comeback win against defending champion UC Davis on Saturday. The importance of that win to the team couldn’t be overstated; it ended a three-game losing streak and gave the Rainbow Wahine a signature moment this season. It was […]
Two areas in particular have been season-long concerns for the Hawaii women’s basketball team. Excessive fouls committed (nearly 20 per game) and excessive turnovers (16.8). The Rainbow Wahine drastically cut down on both in stunning two-time defending Big West champion UC Davis, 65-60, on Saturday afternoon at the Stan Sheriff Center. Their nine turnovers were a season low, as were their 12 fouls. UH (5-10, 1-1 BWC) also won the rebounding battle by nine, as it was bolstered by eight […]
It was a 2-for-1 special Wednesday morning at the Manoa lower campus. Two brand-new facilities upgrades received Native Hawaiian blessings and dedications essentially at the same time (they were back-to-back). Hawaii baseball got its new locker room — re-branded a clubhouse — at Les Murakami Stadium, and the UH basketball teams can say their Gym II practice facility is officially open for business. There’s something to be said for getting off to good starts — in a game, in a season, in a career. Of course, that is far from everything. The Hawaii women’s basketball team has struggled in its Big West Conference openers in its current go-around in the league, but the Rainbow Wahine (except for the last two years) were able to rally and largely succeed the rest of the way. UH is 1-5 in Big West openers since rejoining the league […]
UPDATE: UH defeated UNLV 66-61 in overtime on the first day of the Duel in the Desert, and first game of the holiday trip. UPDATE PART II: UH was routed 73-48 by Megan Huff and Utah in the Duel title game. UPDATE PART III: UH lost a tough one in overtime at Nevada to cap off the three-game road trip. It’s a Laura Beeman staple. The Hawaii women’s basketball team has traveled to the West Coast — or slightly inland […]
A major facilities upgrade is nearly complete at the Manoa lower campus. Within perhaps a week, a climate-controlled, fully refurbished Gym II will be ready for use by the Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams. That’s the primary practice facility on campus outside of the Stan Sheriff Center. It’s a $9-10 million project for Gym II and I. Gym I renovations will commence once Gym II is done. UH athletic director David Matlin has called the improvements “game-changers.” One of […]
Something very rare happened near the tail end of Sunday afternoon’s crossover contest between the Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball teams at the Stan Sheriff Center. HPU, which suited up only eight players, had four players foul out. That meant the Sharks played the final 1:38 with only four players on the court. Yep, 5-on-4 madness ensued at the SSC. The bizarre occurrence did not swing the outcome — directly, at least. The game was already decided by the time […]
On the surface, it sounds impossible. A 1-7 team — a team that’s struggled to close out winnable games — with designs on a 5-0 run through its December schedule? “Yeah, good luck with that,” you might say. But that’s exactly what the Rainbow Wahine basketball team envisioned going into Wednesday’s matchup with former WAC foe Idaho at the Stan Sheriff Center. After holding on for a 69-61 win over the Vandals that snapped a three-game losing streak, UH players Tia […]
