Rainbow Forecast: Football coach hiring possible; men’s volleyball caps road trip; hoops teams win streaks on line

By Brian McInnis on January 20, 2020

Will the Hawaii football team have a new head coach this week? That’s the big question in this week’s Forecast, one that could be resolved as soon as Tuesday, when UH is allowed to begin formal reviews of its applications to find the successor to Nick Rolovich. Assistants like Craig Stutzmann and Brian Smith have been reported to be in the process of joining Washington State’s staff under Rolo, but could still be in the running for the Manoa top […]

Rainbow Forecast: Warrior volleyball hits the road; 2 basketball doubleheaders; Wahine tennis and water polo begin

By Brian McInnis on January 13, 2020

The top-ranked Hawaii men’s volleyball team certainly looked legitimate at home playing against unranked competition. How will the Rainbow Warriors fare on the road against some ranked foes? That’s one of the big questions in UH athletics this week — UH plays four straight on the mainland, starting with two this weekend — but there’s also a pair of basketball doubleheaders at the Stan Sheriff Center (Thursday and Saturday) to occupy your time. The Rainbow Warriors and Wahine hoops squads are […]

Rainbow Forecast: Basketball teams open Big West; men’s volleyball hosts tournament

By Brian McInnis on January 6, 2020

Brace yourselves. Hope everyone enjoyed their holiday break, because the Hawaii athletics calendar revs back into high gear starting this week. The UH basketball teams both head to the road to launch Big West Conference play, the men’s volleyball team hosts a three-matches-in-three-days tournament at the Stan Sheriff Center, and the tennis and swimming & diving squads are in action at home on both the men’s and women’s sides. Without further ado: TUESDAY Men’s tennis: Duke (0-0) at Hawaii (0-0), […]

Rainbow Forecast: New Year heralds return of Hawaii men’s volleyball

By Brian McInnis on December 30, 2019

How recent it felt that the sold-out Stan Sheriff Center rocked like rarely felt before and the Rainbow Warrior volleyball team hoisted the Big West championship trophy after an epic five-set battle against rival Long Beach State. That was April 20, the capper to the home schedule of #WarriorBall19. UH went on to lose a tough one to The Beach in the NCAA championship at The Pyramid, but the memories of that home matchup endure. Well, it’s just about to […]

Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii Bowl and Diamond Head Classic week for football, men’s basketball

By Brian McInnis on December 23, 2019

It’s Christmas week, which means it’s Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic and SoFi Hawaii Bowl week for all you diehards (and us media types). Be sure to get the right balance of family, gifts and egg nog between the non-stop action at the Stan Sheriff Center and Aloha Stadium. For UH football, it’s a chance at a rare 10-win season, something last accomplished in 2010. The Rainbow Warriors last won the Hawaii Bowl in 2016, a 52-35 win over Middle […]

Rainbow Forecast: men’s basketball opens Diamond Head Classic, women’s hoops takes third road trip

By Brian McInnis on December 16, 2019

It’s final exam week on the Manoa campus, which means an exceptionally light workload in this week’s Forecast. In fact, there’s only a single men’s basketball game (at home) and a single women’s basketball game (on the road) to account for at the tail end of the week. However, in the case of the Rainbow Warriors, that’s the start of the always exciting Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. Why so light a schedule? Well, the Hawaii football team doesn’t play […]

Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii women’s volleyball heads to Wisconsin regional; hoops teams host doubleheader Sunday

By Brian McInnis on December 9, 2019

For the first time in what feels like a while, it’s a light week in the Forecast. However, it’s a heavy week for the Hawaii women’s volleyball team, which earned its first regional berth since 2015 by dropping only a single set across two NCAA home matches with Northern Colorado and San Diego over the weekend. The reward for the 12th-seeded Rainbow Wahine? A trip to Madison, Wisc., and a matchup with fifth-seeded Nebraska on Friday. So far, the only […]

Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii football back in Boise for Mountain West title game; Wahine volleyball hosts NCAA subregional; basketball teams face road challenges

By Brian McInnis on December 2, 2019

December is often when things calm down a bit in the realm of collegiate athletics in the wake of typically busy Novembers. Not this week for Hawaii, and not for the Rainbow Forecast. Between the football team heading up to Boise for its first Mountain West championship game, the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team hosting an NCAA subregional for the first time since 2013, and both UH basketball teams heading on the road for stiff challenges against ranked teams … big […]
