Post-marathon tips from Jerold Chun

By Dave Reardon on December 8, 2013

Dr. Jerold Chun is a cardiologist by trade, but he does know a thing or two about running since he’s finished all 41 Honolulu Marathons. He did today’s in 4 hours, 40 minutes and 49 seconds. Dr. Chun shares these tips for post-run recovery, but stresses that they should not be considered official medical advice. > “Once you get in, definitely keep hydrating, lots of fluids.” When you put your body through extreme stress like a marathon fluid gets trapped […]

Could Shoji be UH’s athletic director someday?

By Dave Reardon on December 6, 2013

I like Ben Jay and hope he has a good run as University of Hawaii athletic director. But if and when Jay does leave UH (hopefully after success in getting the athletic department on good footing), would current volleyball coach Dave Shoji be a viable successor? This comes to mind largely because Jay and Shoji have been working together to craft an administration role for Shoji — independent of Shoji’s yet-unscheduled retirement as volleyball coach). The outline at this point […]

Wilson’s passing reminds us of what’s important

By Dave Reardon on November 30, 2013

Sometimes it takes a true tragedy to remind us what is important in life, and that it isn’t wins and losses on a playing field. University of Hawaii running back Willis Wilson apparently drowned this morning at Sandy Beach and will be remembered at tonight’s game with a moment of silence. I got to talk with Willis last summer after a practice in which the walk-on transfer from Washington carried most of the load at his position due to injuries […]

Athletic department renovations unaffected by moratorium

By Dave Reardon on November 26, 2013

Athletic director Ben Jay said the moratorium on new construction projects at the University of Hawaii won’t affect progress on ongoing work and renovation initiatives on lower campus. “Right now the moratorium deals with new construction,” Jay said in a text message today (Tuesday). “I’m assuming for now it does not include renovation. Status of the (T.C.) Ching complex is still Jan. 28 for move-in. End of February for the rest of the complex.” The oft-delayed Ching Field project has […]

By Dave Reardon on November 19, 2013

University of Hawaii athletic director Ben Jay was released from Straub this evening (Tuesday). He was taken to the emergency room there Monday night after he was hit from behind while trying to break up a post-game fight following the UH women’s basketball game against West Virginia on Sunday. “I just got released from the hospital,” he said in a text message. “At Longs right now, Ling (his wife) is getting my pain meds filled. Will stay home the rest […]

Karl Lorch memorial is this Saturday

By Dave Reardon on November 4, 2013

I’m in Greenbelt, Md., today, and thinking of a great athlete from Hawaii who made his mark here in the Washington, D.C. area as a professional. Karl Lorch played defensive line for the Washington NFL team from 1976 to 1981. Many of you know K.P. passed away in late September at age 63, after a long battle with cancer. A memorial service has been set for this Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Kamehameha School Chapel, from noon to 4 p.m.

Notes from Logan, Utah as the Rainbow Warriors approach

By Dave Reardon on November 1, 2013

LOGAN, Utah >> The injury to star quarterback Chuckie Keeton was a real buzz-kill for the Utah State fans. It’s the first thing the young lady at the front desk of the hotel mentioned when I asked if she were a fan of the home team. “They were so good last year, and Chuckie was so exciting. Now, oh well. Go Aggies, I guess.” I told her things could be way worse. She could be a fan of a team […]
