By Brian McInnis on October 19, 2019

The fourth quarter started off so well for Hawaii on Saturday night. The Rainbow Warriors, for a moment, appeared poised to launch into full comeback mode against Air Force, opening the final period with a touchdown connection between Cole McDonald and JoJo Ward. >> PHOTO GALLERY: HAWAII VS. Hawaii football gets rolled at home by Air Force

By Warrior World on October 19, 2019

For the second consecutive week the University of Hawaii knocked the opponent’s starting quarterback out of the game only to have the backup deliver the knockout blow. Second-string signal-caller Michael Schmidt didn’t miss a beat when he came in for fallen teammate Donald Hammond III to lead the Air Force Academy to an easy 56-26 win that was punctuated by a 92-yard interception return for a touchdown on a low Cole McDonald pass that was kicked up in the air […]

Hawaii Football Throwbacks: Air Force

By Brian McInnis on October 19, 2019

Today’s potentially pivotal Mountain West matchup between Hawaii and Air Force could be the latest in a series of close battles between the Rainbow Warriors and the Falcons throughout their history, which stretches back to 1966. Nine times in a 21-game series have UH and the AFA played within a touchdown of each other. In today’s edition of the Throwbacks, we’re focusing on one of those typical nail-biters for the Kuter Trophy — Nov. 26, 1988. The Rainbow Warriors were charmed […]

Hawaii football: Exploring all options

By Stephen Tsai on October 16, 2019

It was a deja vu moment when Va‘a Niumatalolo took snaps at quarterback today at UH’s grass practice field. Niumatalolo, a graduate assistant, is the son of Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo, a former UH assistant coach and quarterback. The younger Niumatalolo has been helpful this week as the Warriors prepare for Air Force’s ground-oriented, triple-option offense. The elder Niumatalolo played and coached in UH’s version of the triple-option under offensive coordinator Paul Johnson. * * * * * The […]

Hawaii football: Valuing possessions vs. Air Force not optional

By Brian McInnis on October 15, 2019

Make each one count. Each one being possessions. That’s the message — offensively, anyway — as Hawaii prepares for Air Force in a second straight cross-divisional Mountain West matchup at 5 p.m. Saturday at Aloha Stadium. “Ground Force” has a way of making the seconds tick all the way down on teams with its triple-option offense. The Falcons dominated time of possession, 39:29 to Fresno State’s 20:31, a 43-24 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday. Give it away, or punt […]

Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii football hosts Air Force, volleyball 2 at home, soccer hits road

By Brian McInnis on October 14, 2019

In this week’s edition of the Forecast, conference races have heated up for the three primary Hawaii sports in action. UH football is licking its wounds from a 59-37 beating at No. 14 Boise State, and has to turn right around and play a very good Air Force team that spanked Fresno State on Saturday. The Rainbow Warriors are still in great shape in the Mountain West’s West Division, though, if they can pull off a win this weekend against […]

AP College Football Poll: What starts with Ti and is ranked No. 1?

By Dave Reardon on October 13, 2019

We’re at about the halfway mark of the season, and things are beginning to sort themselves out. A dozen unbeaten Division I (FBS) teams remain, and they’re all in the AP Top 25 … as it should be, right? Last week we discussed how not all undefeateds are created equal. And while that is still true, at this point does anyone really begrudge Minnesota, Appalachian State or SMU a place in the rankings, at least until they lose a game? […]
