Hawaii football: Cortez Davis’ solid play at corner could help Rainbow Warriors conquer Aztecs

By Dave Reardon on November 20, 2019

Although its offense usually gets most of the accolades, defense can still make crucial contributions for the University of Hawaii football team. Such was the case Saturday when the Rainbow Warriors won 21-7 at UNLV. UH’s offense was stagnant and shaky much of the day, and that made cornerback Cortez Davis’ 43-yard interception touchdown return the decisive play of the game. It broke a 7-all tie late in the third quarter. Another interception, by linebacker Paul Scott in the fourth […]

Hawaii football: Rainbow Warriors roll with thunder

By Brian McInnis on November 19, 2019

As it turned out, Tuesday morning’s Hawaii football practice was closed not just to the media. Mother Nature closed it to the Rainbow Warriors themselves. “A bit of a midstream adjustment at practice, because of the lightning. So, we did some walkthrough. We’ll get some work in this afternoon. Had to adjust today,” said coach Nick Rolovich, who decided previously that this week’s practices (usually open Tuesday and Wednesday) would be closed to local media. “We were not allowed to […]

It’s a big week in this edition of the Forecast — championships are on the line for the Hawaii football and women’s volleyball teams. The Rainbow Warriors, coming off an important 21-7 win at UNLV, will play their biggest home game in years on Saturday at Aloha Stadium against San Diego State. Should UH find a way to top SDSU, it will win the Mountain West West Division and earn a spot in the MWC title game for the first time. […]

AP College Football Poll: Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise — Tua Tagovailoa’s injury affected Alabama’s ranking

By Dave Reardon on November 17, 2019

Since Janet Jackson is in town this week, let’s pose that question everybody’s always got on their mind for everyone else in their life, whether they actually ever voice it or not. What have you done for me lately? That’s a big one for me when filling out the AP Top 25 ballot each week. Some take it a step beyond that and also ask this: What can you do for me going forward? I usually don’t, but I did […]

Hawaii football beats UNLV 21-7 to earn shot at West Division title

By Warrior World on November 16, 2019

In the press conference following Hawaii’s win over San Jose State last weekend, Nick Rolovich didn’t want any part of a question about his team’s chances of winning the West Division of the Mountain West Conference. At that point, too many variables. Well, those variables were greatly reduced with San Diego State’s win over Fresno State on Friday and Hawaii’s dramatic victory over Nevada-Las Vegas today at Sam Boyd Stadium in Henderson, Nev. The 21-7 final score sets up a […]

Hawaii football: BYU accepts SoFi Hawaii Bowl invitation

By Brian McInnis on November 16, 2019

One-half of a desirable Christmas Eve matchup is set. Brigham Young, Hawaii’s longtime football rival, accepted on Saturday an invitation to play in the SoFi Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 24, UH and the Hawaii Bowl announced. “On behalf of ESPN Events and the SoFi Hawaiʻi Bowl Executive Committee, we are very excited to offer BYU their first opportunity to play in the SoFi Hawaii Bowl,” Daryl Garvin, Hawaii Bowl executive director, said in a release. “BYU has played some memorable […]

Hawaii Football Throwbacks: UNLV

By Brian McInnis on November 16, 2019

Hawaii bids a less-than-fond farewell to Sam Boyd Stadium today. UNLV’s traditional home, which is being retired in favor of the Raiders’ new NFL facility after this season, will play host to the Rainbow Warriors for the last time. UH hasn’t won at Sam Boyd since 2007, a losing streak of five. It’s tough to beat the house. But the Rainbow Warriors did in on Nov. 15, 1980, the second of five all-time wins in Vegas (against nine losses), played […]
