Hawaii Football Throwbacks: Army West Point

By Brian McInnis on November 30, 2019

There’s a limited selection of games from which to pull in the Hawaii-Army all-time series. Just four, in fact, and all of them of fairly recent vintage. Last year, we looked at the Greg McMackin-era road win at West Point on a Scott Enos field goal. But this time the Rainbow Warriors get the Black Knights at home … so we’re looking back at the first date between the teams, at Aloha Stadium, on Nov. 22, 2003. The significance of […]

By Warrior World on November 29, 2019

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported today on an incident that occurred toward the end of Hawaii’s Mountain West Conference West Division-title clinching victory over San Diego State. A veteran Honolulu Star-Advertiser photographer, Jamm Aquino, alleges that he was assaulted by head coach Nick Rolovich and another UH athletics employee on the field in the final seconds of the game. After a missed field goal by the Aztecs, Aquino and other photographers ran onto the field along with the UH coaching staff […]

Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii football faces Army on senior night, basketball teams play 2 doubleheaders

By Brian McInnis on November 28, 2019

First and foremost, happy Thanksgiving all. In this week’s delayed edition of the Forecast (I got a little sidetracked at the Maui Invitational) some post-Turkey Day action makes for a busy weekend. Fortunately, there was nothing on the UH calendar in the first half of the week. Of course, there’s the UH football team’s senior night battle against Army, concluding the regular season. Note the late start (7:30 p.m.) for the CBS Sports Network-televised game. The Rainbow Warriors (8-4, 5-3 […]

Is success contagious for University of Hawaii football and women’s volleyball?

By Dave Reardon on November 27, 2019

It was Championship Weekend for University of Hawaii sports. On Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center, the women’s volleyball team swept Long Beach State to become outright champions of the Big West Conference. The next night, at Aloha Stadium, the football team edged San Diego State 14-11 to clinch the Mountain West Conference’s West Division title — the first championship of any kind for the football team since 2010. The Wahine (24-3, 14-2 Big West) haven’t lost since Oct. 11 […]

Preceding those, on Friday, No. 18 Cincinnati is at No. 17 Memphis in a battle between the two highest-ranked non-Power Five conference teams. They both happen to be in the American Athletic Conference, […]

Chasing Championships: Hawaii advances to MWC title game

By Warrior World on November 23, 2019

Hawaii beats San Diego State about as often as a solar eclipse passes through the island chain. So, even though the Rainbow Warriors were favored to knock off the Aztecs tonight, you can understand why many in the Aloha Stadium crowd of 21,592 were dubious. But thanks to a resurgent defense and quarterbacks Cole McDonald and Chevan Cordeiro, the Warriors did exactly that, 14-11, to win the West Division and advance to the Mountain West Conference championship game at Boise […]

Game Day: Hawaii football vs. San Diego State

By Stephen Tsai on November 23, 2019

Matt Araiza was wide right on a 48-yard field goal attempt with two seconds left, preserving Hawaii’s 14-11 victory over San Diego State. The Warriors win a share of the West Division title, and will represent the West in the Mountain West championship game on Dec. 7 at Boise. * * * * * After trading defensive stands, Hawaii takes over at its 12 leading 14-11 with 5:28 to play. The West’s representative in the Dec. 7 MWC title game […]

Hawaii Football Throwbacks: San Diego State

By Brian McInnis on November 23, 2019

Hawaii football has had its fair share of difficulties with San Diego State over the years. But in the teams’ first meeting in the islands? Not so much. The date: Dec. 7, 1940. The site: Old Honolulu Stadium. The score: Hawaii 33, San Diego State College 7. If that date caught your eye, it’s because it was exactly a year before Hawaii would be attacked by Japan, launching America into World War II. While the front-page headlines of the day […]
