After a stunning 70-60 win over first-place UC Davis on Friday, the Aggies returned the favor on Saturday with a vice-grip style 54-46 win over the Rainbow Wahine. On this date in 1997, the Hawaii men’s basketball team served notice that it was the team to beat in the Western Athletic Conference. Hawaii whipped its fan base into a frenzy as Anthony Carter scored 19 points in a 75-62 victory over No. 16 New Mexico in front of 7,197 at the Special Events Arena. Racky Sesler went coast-to-coast for a layup and Hawaii beat Oral Roberts 80-78 before 2,708 fans at the Blaisdell Arena. On this date in 1952, former Saint Louis star and future Circle of Honor inductee Fred Furukawa made UH fans pull a U-Turn. Hawaii beat Memphis State 68-61 in two overtimes at the Civic Auditorium long after fans seemed to give up on the Rainbows. No rainbow, no problem. On this date in 1947, Hawaii won its first Pineapple Bowl with a 19-16 win over Utah. In previous games, a rainbow over the field was credited with sparking UH rallies but in this one the rainbow didn’t show until after the game. By Paul Honda A week ago, Laura Beeman saw her Rainbow Wahine struggle in an 82-74 loss to Division II national powerhouse Hawaii Pacific. Hawaii’s loss to the long-range gunners of HPU was an eye-opener in the first of two nonconference games on the COVID-19 ravaged schedule. Earl Harbin went from a star at Kamehameha to fourth string at Oregon State to starting quarterback for a winning Hawaii squad. On this date in 1961, Harbin threw two touchdowns and Hawaii beat the Kaimuki Spartans 19-18 in front of a crowd of 750 at Honolulu Stadium. The Hawaii women’s volleyball program was insulted about being sent to Nebraska and took it out on the hosts. On this date in 2002, Lily Kahumoku and Kim Willoughby had 25 kills each and the Rainbow Wahine beat the Cornhuskers 30-25, 25-30, 30-27, 30-21 to advance to the Final Four at New Orleans.
