Rainbow Forecast: Marquee matchups at home for Hawaii basketball, on road for men’s volleyball

By Brian McInnis on February 10, 2020

All five of Hawaii’s primary spring spectator sports are in action this week, plus some others. The No. 1 UH men’s volleyball team (12) and Rainbow Wahine basketball team (five) put some significant win streaks on the line. The volleyballers head to the Bay Area to face No. 11 Stanford in a two-match set, while the Wahine host always-competitive Cal State Northridge. UH men’s basketball has two marquee home matchups in Long Beach State on Wednesday and league leader UC […]

Hawaii baseball: Mike Trapasso gladly accepts close wins and generous donations

By Dave Reardon on February 10, 2020

There will always be detractors willing to take the shine off of any victory. When the University of Hawaii baseball team (Manoa) beat UH Hilo in both games of the season-starting series over the weekend at Les Murakami Stadium, some focused on the closeness of the 5-4 and 6-4 scores. They would prefer blowouts instead of narrow margins against the Rainbows’ Division II cousins from Hawaii island. “I don’t care how anyone looks at it. We won two games, and […]

By Cindy Luis on February 10, 2020

Congrats to Rado Parapunov, Player of the Week, and Guilherme Voss , Freshman of Week, in the Big West. Think I would have nominated Brett Sheward for FOW. Defensive POW to UCI’s Scott Stadick for his performance in the Outrigger. —————— Hawaii (12-0) remained at No. 1 in today’s AVCA Top 15 poll, receiving 11 first-place votes. Hawaii softball: Rainbow Wahine settle into new roles in opening tournament

By Brian McInnis on February 9, 2020

The Paradise Classic ended the way it started for the Hawaii softball team. With a lopsided win over Northern Colorado. In between, the Rainbow Wahine took their lumps from Memphis and Iowa State, the latter of which went on to win the four-team tournament on Saturday afternoon, as they worked through new roles and responsibilities. After beating UNC 11-2 in the season opener Thursday, the Wahine absorbed 8-4 and 15-3 successive defeats to ISU and Memphis on Friday. The first […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Drew Buggs salutes late mother after breaking UH assist record

By Brian McInnis on February 9, 2020

For most of Hawaii’s battle with Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, it appeared the record was destined to fall at the Stan Sheriff Center in the coming week. Drew Buggs needed only three assists to become UH’s new all-time record-holder, and he was making his customary passes to open teammates. But for whatever reason, those shots weren’t falling in Mott Gym like they had been. Finally, after UH rallied from 15 points down late in regulation to […]

Hawaii men’s volleyball: Rado Parapunov, Charlie Wade see room for improvement

By Brian McInnis on February 9, 2020

There would be no grand pronouncements of championship destiny coming from the Hawaii men’s volleyball team on this night. Even after a sweep of No. 4 UC Irvine that moved the No. 1 Rainbow Warriors to 12-0 and gave them the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts title, in addition to a 25th straight home win. Perhaps it was the five straight match points that the Anteaters saved before UH finally put it away at 25-22, 25-20, 25-20. Or that UH hit […]

By Jonathan Chen on February 8, 2020

The Hawaii baseball team picked up up its second win of the 2020 season, 6-4 over Hawaii Hilo, thanks in part to the bat of shortstop Kole Kaler on Saturday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium. The junior was terrific at the plate, picking up a team-best three hits in his four at-bats, including each of his first three. He also finished with one sacrifice bunt, as well as one stolen base. “I thought Kole, the whole weekend, was outstanding. We […]
