Hawaii athletics: Ups and downs of a busy Saturday

By Brian McInnis on February 23, 2020

A lot happened in the realm of University of Hawaii athletics on Saturday, the 22nd of February. Some of it was excellent, some so-so, and some UH fans would probably sooner forget. Just about every spring sport was in action in form or fashion, with the notable exception being the No. 1 UH men’s volleyball team, which had a bye week. UH tennis also did not play Saturday. The singular greatest achievements were had by the men’s and women’s swimming […]

By Jonathan Chen on February 22, 2020

For the first time in over 50 games, the Hawaii baseball team saw a new face leading off the batting order. Outfielder Tyler Best jumped from No. 9 to No. 1 in the lineup, hitting 2-for-3 for two runs on two doubles to lead the Rainbow Warriors (7-2) to a 4-3 victory over the Washington State Cougars. “It was a good team win. Before the game I was talking to Dustin (Demeter),” Best said. “I was a little amped. He […]

Hawaii-Washington State baseball: Game 3

By Stephen Tsai on February 22, 2020

Three takeaways from Hawaii baseball’s 4-3 victory over Washington State: > Jeremy Wu-Yelland is tough and athletic. He pitched on Friday, then came back to get the final four outs tonight. Wu-Yelland mixed his pitches — sliders against lefties, change-ups against righties. He also made the play of the game when he fielded Collin Montez‘s drag bunt and out-raced him to first. “He could have cartwheeled to first,” first baseman Alex Baeza said of Wu-Yelland’s athleticism. > Tyler Best was […]

Hawaii baseball: Late mistakes keep game interesting, but ‘Bows even series against Washington State

By Jonathan Chen on February 21, 2020

Winning ugly was the name of the game Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium, as the Rainbow Warriors won an error-filled three-hit affair over the Washington State Cougars 4-2 to even the series at one win apiece. “Winning ugly is an interesting way to putting it,” head coach Mike Trapasso said. “You’re not going to win many games when you get outhit 11-3, but we did that because we played good defense, and we didn’t walk anybody.” A staple for […]

Hawaii beach volleyball: 7 indoor players attempt to find their sand legs

By Brian McInnis on February 21, 2020

Sailors have sea legs. Beach volleyball players? “One thing we talk about is getting your sand legs,” Hawaii beach coach Jeff Hall said of when an indoor volleyball player makes the spring transition to the uneven playing surface. “Coming from indoor, they go to jump out here, and they don’t get out of the sand. Or they’ll lateral jump instead of jumping straight up and down.” Seven UH indoor players — Brooke Van Sickle, Jolie Rasmussen, Hanna Hellvig, Norene Iosia, Janelle […]

Hawaii softball: Callee Heen climbs up home run chart in Rainbow Wahine win

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 20, 2020

As so often happens, Callee Heen wasn’t aiming for the fences when she delivered a pivotal blast for the Rainbow Wahine softball team Thursday night. After the Wahine erased an early three-run deficit against Portland State, when Heen stepped to the plate with a runner on base and two out in the bottom of the fourth, “I was just trying to hit line drives,” she said, “because the wind was really blowing a lot so nothing in the air was […]

Hawaii baseball: Rainbow Warriors continue to struggle in series openers

By Billy Hull on February 20, 2020

Throw strikes and let the defense play behind you. It’s the philosophy Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso has used with his pitchers for his nearly 20 years on the job and it was exactly what starter Logan Pouelsen did in the opener of a four-game series against Washington State on Thursday night at Les Murakami Stadium. Unfortunately for Pouelsen, the Cougars, led by first-year coach Brian Green — the former UH assistant who turned around New Mexico State over the past […]
