Siena Springborn, a 6-foot middle/opposite out of Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, Calif., was announced by UH on Friday. She was a two-time all-league first-team selection at Newport. “We are very thrilled to have Siena join our team this coming fall,” Ah Mow said in a UH release. “Siena is hard working, versatile and committed to becoming the best player she can be. She […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Current Rainbow Warriors make their picks for virtual Final Four winners

By Dave Reardon on April 3, 2020

I asked some current University of Hawaii basketball players who they like to go all the way as we’ve arrived at the Final Four of our UH men’s hoops online tournament. Justin Hemsley and Zoar Nedd are also members of the sports media class I taught at Crawford Hall before we were forced into cyberspace. Sitting between them at a Rainbow Wahine game a few weeks back, I learned that in addition to possessing physical gifts both are astute students […]

Hawaii football lands JUCO All-America receiver

By Stephen Tsai on April 1, 2020

“No April fool’s (joke),” Alonzell “Zelly” Henderson said, “yes, I will be a Warrior.” Henderson, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound inside receiver from College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, Calif., said he is fully committed to accepting a scholarship from the UH football team. Because this is deemed a “dead period” — no in-person contact between coaches and a recruit — due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Henderson must wait until the NCAA restrictions are lifted before he can put his 2020 […]

NCAA ruling: Hawaii’s spring-sport seniors allowed to compete next season

By Stephen Tsai on March 30, 2020

UH’s spring-sport senior athletes will get a do-over thanks to an NCAA ruling. The Division I Council today approved a measure that will provide spring-sport players an “additional season of competition and an extension of their period of eligibility,” the NCAA announced today on its website. The ruling was made in response to spring-sport athletes whose seasons were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision essentially freezes each athlete’s current class standing, meaning a senior this year will be […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: 100th Season Best-Team Bracket, Elite Eight, Day 4

By Warrior World on March 29, 2020

Can Hawaii’s all-time leading scorer prevent the Hawaii basketball 100th Season Best-Team Bracket from coming down to a matchup of the top four seeds? Chris Gaines and the hard-nosed NIT quarterfinal team of 1989-90 will have their work cut out for them against the second-seeded, inaugural NCAA Tournament team of 1971-72. One “Fabulous Five” team has already been knocked out; doubtless Bob Nash and Co. are motivated to move on to the final weekend. So far, the voters have selected […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Jessiya Villa joins list of Rainbow Warrior transfers; 2 Rainbow Wahine reportedly transfer

By Warrior World on March 28, 2020

The following appeared on the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s breaking news: Jessiya Villa, a freshman point guard for the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team, confirmed he has entered the transfer portal. Villa redshirted this season after returning from a two-year church mission in Ghana. “I entered this morning,” Villa said. “I’m officially a transfer. … In this business, in this realm, you just gotta keep yourself happy, and do what’s best, not only for yourself, more so, for everyone. I respect […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: 100th Season Best-Team Bracket, Elite Eight, Day 3

By Warrior World on March 28, 2020

Chalk continues to rule the day in the Hawaii basketball 100th Season Best-Team Bracket. Friday’s 4-5 matchup between the 1997-98 “Dynamic Duo” and the 1970-71 “Fabulous Five” went the way of the pair, not the quintet, and rather decisively, too — 71.2% to 28.8% as the poll is almost closed. Will the favorites continue their domination today on Day 3 of the quarterfinals? The NCAA Tournament-seasoned international wonder boys of the third seed, 2001-02, must contend with the first iteration of […]
