Baseball ‘Bows prepare for alums, Grand Slam

By Brian McInnis on February 8, 2019

It’s a regular refrain for coaches and athletes doing preseason interviews to celebrate “seeing someone new” or “not having to go against ourselves” once actual games are set to begin. In the case of the Hawaii baseball team this weekend, seeing someone new involves seeing someone old. The annual alumni game is 11 a.m. Saturday. Admission is free. No official roster has been issued for the alums yet, but word is knuckleballer Steven Wright of the Boston Red Sox could […]

Can ‘Bows beat out pick again?

By Brian McInnis on January 30, 2019

Hawaii baseball has never been picked especially high in the Big West. It’s also true that Mike Trapasso’s teams have outperformed their perceived status the last several years. It’s the third time UH was picked there, along with its first two seasons in the […]

The D1Baseball.com season preview of the Big West has Hawaii finishing sixth at 11-13 (identical to last season) in a conference that is expected to be much improved in 2019. In terms of individual talent however, Hawaii right-hander Dylan Thomas, who UH coach Mike […]

By Stephen Tsai on January 24, 2019

UH baseball coach Mike Trapasso announced that Dylan Thomas will be the Rainbow Warriors’ opening-night starting pitcher. Thomas, a fourth-year junior, led the Big West with 14 saves last season. He turned down an offer to sign with the Minnesota Twins this past summer to return to UH. In preseason training, Thomas has cross-trained as a starter and reliever. He is averaging 60 pitches a session and is on track to reach the 90-pitch threshold for starting pitchers entering the […]

Warrior Beat: Pacheco is the new “Voice”

By Stephen Tsai on January 17, 2019

Announcer/host Josh Pacheco will be the play-by-play announcer for ESPN 1420’s broadcasts of UH baseball game this season. “I would say Josh is a consummate pro,” said Chris Hart, the station’s sales director and co-host of the “Sports Animals” talk show. “He prepares feverishly for all his play-by-play.” Pacheco succeeds UH Circle of Honor inductee Jim Leahey, who announced his retirement from broadcasting last year. Don Robbs, who was the baseball “voice” for 40 years, and Leahey have been the […]
