Court Sense: Lower campus live blog March 15

By Brian McInnis on March 15, 2019

Another crazy weekend ramps up tonight at the Manoa lower campus. There’s softball against No. 4 Alabama (6 p.m.), baseball against Cal State Bakersfield (6:35 p.m.), and the No. 2 UH men’s volleyball team taking on Cal State Northridge in Big West action (7 p.m.). Check out Jason Kaneshiro’s day-by-day guide here if you’re still trying to figure out what’s what. I’m here to help you keep track of the madness. (And also to tell you if the lower campus […]

Rainbow baseball toes line between lucky and good

By Billy Hull on March 15, 2019

On it’s own it’s an incredible statistic. Only 17 games into the 2019 season, the Hawaii baseball team has already won five games when trailing after seven innings. It’s a mark that shows an ability to play all nine innings, battle to the very end and never give up. Those traits are obviously important to being a good team, but as Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso wisely said after Thursday’s 7-4 win over Cal State Bakersfield, it’s also an unsustainable method […]

Court Sense: Lower campus live blog March 9

By Brian McInnis on March 9, 2019

The onslaught continues. If anything, it’s ramped up on Saturday. There’s the same trifecta of events going on at the Manoa lower campus — softball, baseball and men’s volleyball. But softball has a doubleheader today (Niagara and SIU-Edwardsville), baseball continues its four-game series against Oregon and volleyball hosts No. 6 Pepperdine to cap its three-day tournament. The UH women’s basketball team already won a big game at CSUN and the men’s team is looking to close the regular season with […]

Warrior Beat: Fogel likely to miss rest of season

By Stephen Tsai on March 9, 2019

The UH baseball team received more discouraging news when an MRI showed center fielder Adam Fogel suffered significant damage to his right (throwing) shoulder. Fogel suffered the injury during an eighth-inning slide a week ago. The hope was the injury was not too serious, and that he eventually would feel good enough to be used as a designated hitter, at the least. But the pain did not subside, and Friday’s MRI confirmed the worst-case scenario. It appears Fogel will need […]

Lots of action on campus this week

By Jason Kaneshiro on March 7, 2019

University of Hawaii fans could probably use a version of Disney’s “Park Hopper” pass to keep up with the action on the lower campus this week. The Rainbow Wahine softball team opened the on-campus action with an 11-2 win over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday to open the Outrigger Resorts Hawaii Spring Fling Tournament. The Wahine (13-4) take on California of the Pac-12 in the last of three games scheduled at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium on Thursday. The tournament runs through […]

Rainbow Warrior baseball: No short cuts

By Stephen Tsai on March 6, 2019

The late, great Ferd Borsch once noted that baseball, as a sport without a clock, could conceivably have a game that never ends. Well, we have a clock and we noticed that UH games involving video-review options take longer — much, much longer — than games without. According to our abacus and moon dial, the four games allowing reviews averaged 3 hours, 56 minutes. Games without the reviews averaged 3 hours, 14 minutes. There are some factors. The replay monitors […]

Game Night: UH vs. Longwood

By Stephen Tsai on March 1, 2019

UPDATE 2: Dylan Thomas was dominant, striking out 11 in a 9-1 win for UH. It was the first time this season UH won the first two games of a series. UPDATE: UH got the series started with a 5-4 comeback win over Longwood, with Dallas Duarte knocking in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth. UH and Longwood meet tonight in the first game of a four-game series over five days. They don’t play on Monday. > […]

‘Bows in the pros

By Stephen Tsai on February 25, 2019

Hawaii is well represented in the Alliance of American Football league. Consider: > Benetton Fonua: The Star-Advertiser’s 2011 Defensive Player of the Year and 2012 Kahuku High graduate played in 43 games during his four-season UH career. He’s now a 6-foot, 234-pound linebacker with the Memphis Express. > Meffy Koloamatangi: The younger brother of Leo Koloamatangi (now with the Detroit Lions), Meffy Koloamatangi had a productive career with the Warriors. He is now a 6-5, 273-pound defensive end for the […]
