Hawaii baseball: Big challenge ahead for final home weekend

By Brian McInnis on May 17, 2019

The Hawaii baseball team is out of the Big West title race, but it can muck things up for the team that is currently in the driver’s seat. UH (20-24, 8-10 BWC) is seven games behind No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (41-7, 15-3) with six games to play in a conference that awards its automatic NCAA tournament berth to the regular-season champion. Cal Poly (13-5) and UC Irvine (12-6) are the teams hoping Hawaii can end the red-hot Gauchos’ 10-game […]

Warrior Beat: Hawaii athletics graduation day

By Stephen Tsai on May 11, 2019

Three former UH basketball players — Sheriff Drammeh, Brocke Stepteau and Jack Purchase — earned degrees today and are ready for the next phase of their lives. Drammeh has reached an agreement with a sports agency in Europe and is expected to play professionally over there. Purchase is headed back to his native Australia to audition for the professional league over there. The free-agent period is coming up. Stepteau is exploring options in basketball and music. He is accompanying Purchase […]

Hawaii baseball: Can UH ride ‘Bowmentum’ up the standings?

By Brian McInnis on April 24, 2019

The power of “Bowmentum” cannot be underestimated, according to those who hang about the Hawaii clubhouse. The Rainbow Warriors (16-20, 6-6 Big West), who are coming off a rousing 2-1 series win over always problematic Cal State Fullerton, reside in fourth place in the nine-team conference at the midpoint of the league schedule. Could the season’s signature moment to this point — Logan Pouelsen’s walk-off home run in Game 2 of that series — be an inflection point to success? “That’s […]

Hawaii baseball: Dylan Thomas shows support for teammate

By Stephen Tsai on April 17, 2019

UH relief pitcher Dylan Thomas has cut his hair in support of third baseman Ethan Lopez‘s father. As KHON sports director Rob DeMello first reported last week, Fernando Lopez is battling cancer. Before departing on the recent road trip, Ethan Lopez cut the hair he had been growing for 18 months in support of his father. He donated his hair to Locks of Love, which benefits children undergoing cancer treatment. Thomas decided to also show support, cutting his recognizable long […]

Warrior Beat: Middle schoolers, “GOT,” hoops banquet

By Stephen Tsai on April 14, 2019

Things are getting busier and busier on the Manoa campus. Yesterday marked the Warriors’ first “Middle School Day.” While most schools have “Junior Days” for high school students wishing to learn more about their institutions (and football programs, of course), UH had an open house for middle school students. The emphasis is that no matter your future aspirations, every class in high school counts. Too often when students are considering college, they are hindered by poor grades as freshmen or […]

Warrior Beat: Finish to start

By Stephen Tsai on March 22, 2019

Baseball coach Mike Trapasso has a unique dilemma: His best pitcher is his best starter and best reliever. His solution is to try to use Dylan Thomas in a closer’s role in the first two games of a series. If situations dictate that Thomas does not appear in those two games, he starts in the third. And that’s why Thomas will start in Saturday’s third game of the four-game series against Ohio State. The Rainbow Warriors dropped the first two […]

Court Sense: Lower campus live blog March 16

By Brian McInnis on March 16, 2019

In terms of variety and quantity, it’s the day of days for Hawaii sports on the Manoa lower campus. Softball against Niagara and No. 4 Alabama. Baseball against Cal State Bakersfield. Water polo against the top-ranked team in the country, USC, that made some headlines lately (you might’ve heard about it). Men’s volleyball against Cal State Northridge. And beach volleyball just off campus at Queen’s Beach. And over in Southern California, the UH women’s basketball team playing UC Davis in […]

Hawaii baseball’s Carter Loewen poised to pounce on opportunity

By Billy Hull on March 16, 2019

After watching his team play its “worst game of the season” in his words, Hawaii baseball coach Mike Trapasso made it abundantly clear after Friday’s 8-4 loss to CSU Bakersfield that other pitchers are going to get an opportunity to throw more. “I’m not going to keep sending the same guys out there that are not throwing strikes,” Trapasso said after the ‘Bows allowed four runs — the margin of loss — to batters who either walked or were hit by a […]
