Hawaii baseball: Dustin Demeter, Cardiac ‘Bows walk it off over Hilo in 2020 opener

By Jonathan Chen on February 7, 2020

What. A. Finish. The Hawaii baseball team showed off the ice in its veins to the 1,700-plus Rainbow Warriors’ faithful at Les Murakami Stadium on Friday night. The ‘Bows (1-0) took things down to the wire, finally pulling ahead on the final swing of the game to take Hawaii Hilo down 5-4. A pair of key returnees fueled the late rally for the ‘Bows. Redshirt junior Adam Fogel, who missed 40 games in 2019 after an injury to his throwing […]

Hawaii baseball: ‘Find the Joy’ the mission as 2020 season begins

By Brian McInnis on February 6, 2020

Joy was hard to come by in 2019 for the Hawaii baseball team. Injuries and losses mounted in equal measure for the Rainbow Warriors, who came apart down the stretch to tie at the bottom of the Big West with two other teams. The 2020 Rainbow Warriors’ mission statement is to “Find the Joy” and make it last throughout the season. “The truth is for me personally, finding the joy is something I need to remind myself of,” said 19th-year […]

Hawaii baseball: Rainbow Warriors picked sixth in Big West

By Brian McInnis on January 29, 2020

The Hawaii baseball team was selected to finish sixth place in the Big West Conference in 2020, the league announced Wednesday. That matches the Rainbow Warriors’ highest preseason prediction in eight years of Big West membership. Perennial contender Cal State Fullerton was picked to win the league in a vote of the BWC’s nine head coaches. UH was also picked to finish sixth in 2019, as well. The Rainbow Warriors were 7-6 in BWC play at one point before dropping […]

Who were the most notable Hawaii sports figures of the decade?

By Dave Reardon on December 31, 2019

Ten years ago, I wrote that Michelle Wie was the most notable sports figure with Hawaii ties of the just-completed decade. The list for the years 2010-2019 is quite a bit different — and Wie, who was a PGA pro in her prime years, only makes this one as an honorable mention. 10. Gerald Oda spent the entire decade — and many years prior — teaching youngsters the right way to play baseball and handle themselves on and off the […]

Hawaii baseball alum Kolten Wong wins first Gold Glove

By Christian Shimabuku on November 3, 2019

St. Louis Cardinals second baseman and former University of Hawaii star Kolten Wong won his first Gold Glove on Sunday, as voted on by MLB coaches and managers. Wong beat out finalists Ozzie Albies of the Atlanta Braves and Adam Frazier of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Many believed Wong would win his first Gold Glove at second base last year, but that award went to DJ LeMahieu, who was with the Colorado Rockies at the time. Wong was a finalist at […]

Hawaii baseball: 53-game schedule includes national champ Vanderbilt

By Stephen Tsai on November 2, 2019

The Hawaii baseball team announced an ambitious 2020 schedule that features a road series against defending championship Vanderbilt. The Rainbow Warriors will play 53 games, including a three-weekend stretch in which Pac-12 opponents Washington State and Oregon will bookend the road trip against Vanderbilt. The ‘Bows also will embark on a eight-game, 14-day road trip in April. That trip will include nonconference games against Cal State Bakersfield, which joins the Big West the following season, and Pepperdine. The ‘Bows play […]

Hawaii baseball: Armed and ready

By Stephen Tsai on October 19, 2019

There are a lot of things to take away from last night’s 15-inning exhibition between the Hawaii and Air Force baseball teams. The Rainbow Warriors won, 12-7, in a pitchers’ showcase skewed by nine runs in the 13th inning — five by UH, five by AFA. Some thoughts: > The ‘Bows have a lot of pitching depth. “We’ve been throwing strikes all fall,” head coach Mike Trapasso said. Of the scrimmage, “13 of our 15 guys threw well,” Trapasso said, […]

‘Bows in the Pros: Hawaii baseball alum Kolten Wong looks to build on best year

By Brian McInnis on October 3, 2019

Kolten Wong is ready to build on his finest season to date. When the Hawaii alum’s St. Louis Cardinals take on the Atlanta Braves today in the NL Division Series (11 a.m. HST on TBS), the second baseman is expected to bat seventh in the lineup in his return from a recent injury. And if he produces like he did before he went out of the lineup, that’s a huge gain for the NL Central champs. Wong, in his sixth […]
