Hawaii baseball: Late mistakes keep game interesting, but ‘Bows even series against Washington State

By Jonathan Chen on February 21, 2020

Winning ugly was the name of the game Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium, as the Rainbow Warriors won an error-filled three-hit affair over the Washington State Cougars 4-2 to even the series at one win apiece. “Winning ugly is an interesting way to putting it,” head coach Mike Trapasso said. “You’re not going to win many games when you get outhit 11-3, but we did that because we played good defense, and we didn’t walk anybody.” A staple for […]

Hawaii baseball: Rainbow Warriors continue to struggle in series openers

By Billy Hull on February 20, 2020

Throw strikes and let the defense play behind you. It’s the philosophy Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso has used with his pitchers for his nearly 20 years on the job and it was exactly what starter Logan Pouelsen did in the opener of a four-game series against Washington State on Thursday night at Les Murakami Stadium. Unfortunately for Pouelsen, the Cougars, led by first-year coach Brian Green — the former UH assistant who turned around New Mexico State over the past […]

Rainbow Forecast: Washington State to test Hawaii baseball; women’s basketball has first-place showdown; SandBows begin

By Brian McInnis on February 17, 2020

With the exception of the top-ranked Hawaii men’s volleyball team, just about every other spring sport is in action this week. That includes beach volleyball, which opens its 2020 season in the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic at Queen’s Beach. The SandBows begin at No. 5. Scout the smorgasbord below and pick your spots, because there’s an absolute ton going on — though much of it takes place on the mainland for sports like water polo, swimming and women’s tennis. The […]

Hawaii baseball: Scotty Scott looking to build on Freshman of the Year campaign

By Jonathan Chen on February 15, 2020

Following a lackluster offensive performance by Hawaii in the series opener against North Dakota State, getting the bats going was an obvious priority in Game 2. A new-look lineup responded with 10 runs on 10 hits in a 10-2 beatdown of the Bison on Saturday afternoon. “We’re a really good ball club all the way up and down,” leadoff hitter Scotty Scott said. “Three or four new guys, but they act like they’ve been there. Daylen (Calicdan) got a couple […]

Hawaii baseball: Logan Pouelsen’s strong outing wasted in Rainbow Warriors’ loss to North Dakota State

By Jonathan Chen on February 14, 2020

After clinging to a one-run lead for over six innings, the Hawaii baseball team gave up a run in each of the final three innings to take a 3-1 loss to the North Dakota State Bison, the Rainbow Warriors’ first loss of the season. The loss came in spite of a strong performance by starting pitcher Logan Pouelsen. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native pitched for 6 1/3 innings, throwing a total of 92 pitches. He gave up just one run […]

Rainbow Forecast: Marquee matchups at home for Hawaii basketball, on road for men’s volleyball

By Brian McInnis on February 10, 2020

All five of Hawaii’s primary spring spectator sports are in action this week, plus some others. The No. 1 UH men’s volleyball team (12) and Rainbow Wahine basketball team (five) put some significant win streaks on the line. The volleyballers head to the Bay Area to face No. 11 Stanford in a two-match set, while the Wahine host always-competitive Cal State Northridge. UH men’s basketball has two marquee home matchups in Long Beach State on Wednesday and league leader UC […]

Hawaii baseball: Mike Trapasso gladly accepts close wins and generous donations

By Dave Reardon on February 10, 2020

There will always be detractors willing to take the shine off of any victory. When the University of Hawaii baseball team (Manoa) beat UH Hilo in both games of the season-starting series over the weekend at Les Murakami Stadium, some focused on the closeness of the 5-4 and 6-4 scores. They would prefer blowouts instead of narrow margins against the Rainbows’ Division II cousins from Hawaii island. “I don’t care how anyone looks at it. We won two games, and […]

Hawaii baseball: Kole Kaler adjusting to life in Division I as Rainbow Warriors pick up second win

By Jonathan Chen on February 8, 2020

The Hawaii baseball team picked up up its second win of the 2020 season, 6-4 over Hawaii Hilo, thanks in part to the bat of shortstop Kole Kaler on Saturday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium. The junior was terrific at the plate, picking up a team-best three hits in his four at-bats, including each of his first three. He also finished with one sacrifice bunt, as well as one stolen base. “I thought Kole, the whole weekend, was outstanding. We […]
