By Brian McInnis on January 14, 2019

The first full baseball practice of the 2019 preseason took place Monday at Les Murakami Stadium. UH was 27-24 in 2018, and 11-13 in the Big West. The Rainbows were hit hard by injuries down the stretch and lost eight of their final 11 BWC games to finish in sixth. Here are interviews on the prospects of the coming season with 2018 closer (and now possible starter) Dylan Thomas, first baseman/outfielder Adam Fogel, and head coach Mike Trapasso, now in […]

Day of the dedications

By Brian McInnis on January 9, 2019

It was a 2-for-1 special Wednesday morning at the Manoa lower campus. Two brand-new facilities upgrades received Native Hawaiian blessings and dedications essentially at the same time (they were back-to-back). Hawaii baseball got its new locker room — re-branded a clubhouse — at Les Murakami Stadium, and the UH basketball teams can say their Gym II practice facility is officially open for business. Warrior Beat: Greenwald was voice of a generation

By Stephen Tsai on October 24, 2018

Before Al Michaels and Ken Wilson and the first two broadcasting Leaheys and Allan Elconin and “The General,” there was Hank Greenwald. It was at the old “Termite Palace” — Honolulu Stadium — where Greenwald narrated Hawaii Islander games (and occasional UH football games) in the mid-1960s. He kept his broadcasts fun and funny. And then he was off to the mainland, where he notably had two memorable stints as the San Francisco Giants’ play-by-play announcer. Don Robbs described Greenwald […]

Thomas wins baseball award

By Stephen Tsai on August 9, 2018

Dylan Thomas’ summer of fun resulted in being named the top relief pitcher in the prestigious Cape Cod Summer League. Thomas, who is returning to UH for his junior season, was 3-0 with a 1.19 earned-run average and nine saves for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. In 22 2/3 innings, he struck out 33 and walked two. He had a 0.88 WHIP. “Not surprised at all he received the award because of how his numbers were and how he did,” UH […]

Day 5 practice … remembering Manny Relator

By Stephen Tsai on August 1, 2018

There were mixed results for the Warriors’ fifth practice of training camp. Quarterbacks Jeremy Moussa, Chevan Cordeiro, Cole McDonald and Kolney Cassel took turns in situational and scrimmage-like sessions. Moussa, a freshman, directed the only scoring drive. He completed a 56-yard pass to JoJo Ward to set up a 17-yard TD strike to a leaping Devan Stubblefield. “In the huddle, they were expecting the ball coming my way,” Ward recalled. “We had a connection coming my way.” In the past […]
