Makana Garrigan’s next job might be with the same company as his previous job. The past two seasons, Garrigan served as a graduate assistant with the UH defense. He earned his master’s degree two weeks ago. Garrigan is a candidate to be an intern for the Warriors this coming football season.

‘Bows’ 10-6 win caps UH sports season

By Stephen Tsai on May 26, 2018

UH’s 2017-18 athletic year concluded at around 2 p.m. Hawaii time when left fielder Johnny Weeks made the final putout of the baseball ’Bows’ 10-6 victory over UC Santa Barbara. What began with a Week Zero game against … — oh, heck, was it, UMass? — what seemed like a long, long time ago ended on a windy day in the “American Riviera.” All in all, it was kinda fun. * * * * * Today’s baseball game also marked […]

Center gets attention — and a scholarship

By Stephen Tsai on May 25, 2018

Head coach Nick Rolovich confirmed that center Taaga Tuulima has been placed on scholarship. Tuulima, who aspires a post-football career in engineering, was an important bridge when center Asotui Eli suffered an injury in the fourth quarter against San Diego State. Tuulima played center the final two UH series. The next game, Tuulima started against UNLV, when the Warriors amassed 400 yards. This past spring training, Tuulima practiced with the first team when Eli worked an internship. In UH’s offense, […]

Local TV sports pioneer

By Stephen Tsai on May 24, 2018

Yes, kids, there was a time when big tackles were not Katooshes and you couldn’t watch your high school volleyball team’s matches on the wide screen in your living room. Local TV programming? That was “Let’s Go Fishing,” “Hawaiian Moving Company” and occasional Andy Bumatai specials. And then Mitzi Lehano’s vision became a reality. Now, OC 16 is so synonymous with high schools sports that it still uses that title even when it is no longer on channel 16. (It […]

Two recruits report to Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on May 23, 2018

Remember that fourth-grade debate: What comes first — Christmas or New Year’s Day? Which brings us to UH’s Summer Session I. Is that the end of the 2017-18 academic year or the beginning of the 2018-19 school year? But I digress. Two members of the 2018 recruiting class — wideout Nick Mardner and offensive lineman Kohl Levao — are enrolled in Summer Session I, which began on Monday. The majority of the remaining recruits will arrive ahead of the starts […]

UH has a new travel partner

By Stephen Tsai on May 22, 2018

After nearly 20 years, the UH athletic department is getting a new travel partner. JTB Hawaii, whose bid recently was accepted, will be handling travel arrangements for all the UH teams. JTB Hawaii takes over on July 1. The change ends Panda Travel’s association with UH athletics, a partnership that began after former Gov. Ben Cayetano solicited sponsors for the football program. Panda staffed an office in the athletic department to quicken travel arrangements. Through the years, the Panda agents […]

Spangler leaving KHON

By Stephen Tsai on May 21, 2018

One of the good guys in sports journalism — Sam Spangler — is leaving KHON next month. Spangler and wife Chassis will be joining the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai. Spangler succeeded on and off the field. He pitched for the Rainbow Warriors from 2007 through 2010, then spent two years in the Minnesota Twins organization. In August 2012, he was hired as a sports reporter/producer at KHON. Spangler is among the new wave of multiple-skill sports journalists. He reports, shoots […]

The end is here

By Stephen Tsai on May 20, 2018

Today’s UH-Long Beach State is the final sporting event on the Manoa campus this athletic year. It also will be the final home game for 12 baseball seniors — a 13th, Colin Ashworth, is expected to return on a medical exemption. Today’s senior celebration comes with a bonus. Dr. Ron Cambra, UH’s Assistant Vice Chancellor of Undergraduate Education, will present replica diplomas to this year’s 14 graduates. Most of the graduates, including junior Jackson Rees, missed UH’s commencement ceremony last […]
