All present

By Stephen Tsai on July 2, 2018

The entire UH men’s basketball team is enrolled in the second summer session, which began today. Attendance is key because 1) the Warriors can have full participation in the eight hours of individual/team drills they are allowed each week during the summer, and 2) it will ease the way for the extra practices granted in advance of next month’s trip to Australia. Among the newcomers are combo guard Eddie Stansberry, and post players Dawson Carper and Owen Hulland. Kapolei High […]

Kuewa set to join Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on July 1, 2018

Kalamaku Kuewa, a 2018 Kamehamaha-Kapalama graduate, is set to join the Warriors as a walk-on. Kuewa is a 6-foot, 185-pound safety. In 2017, he was credited with eight interceptions, parlaying one into a touchdown, and three forced fumbles. Kuewa was named to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s all-state second team. “No. 1, he’s a high-character kid,” Kamehameha coach Abu Maafala said. “He’s a hard-worker. I think UH is getting a steal in him.” Maafala said Kuewa’s skills as a baseball center fielder […]

Good to go

By Stephen Tsai on June 30, 2018

Several years ago, mainland police departments were hiring away HPD officers with the lure of higher pay and better benefits. It was irritating (HPD spent money to train officers who would leave) and complimentary (HPD officers were good enough to be poached.) . And that leads to the how UH is developing players that others are poaching. It’s been going on for a long time. But in recent years, what has stood out was Boise State plucking Zak Hill 48 […]

Travel changes

By Stephen Tsai on June 29, 2018

Thursday was an emotional day with end of the partnership between Panda Travel and the UH athletic department. It was a relationship that spanned more than 20 years, and grew from then-Gov. Ben Cayetano’s appeal for the community to support the UH football program. Panda’s two-person office on the athletic complex’s third floor was cleared Thursday to make way for the JTB Hawaii, which won the rights to arrange UH’s travel. The transition was eased with JTB retaining Lavana Francisco […]

Kapolei’s Toilolo picks Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on June 28, 2018

Linebacker/safety Dylan Toilolo will join the Warriors next week. Here’s the skinny: > Credentials: Toilolo was named to the Star-Advertiser’s all-state first team as a Saint Louis School linebacker in 2016 and to the second team as a Kapolei High safety last year. He can mix it up (he was an inside backer in the Crusaders’ 3-4 scheme) and all over the place in the Hurricanes’ 4-4 defense. > Road to Manoa: Toilolo was all set to join Utah. He […]

UH football: Bridge is open

By Stephen Tsai on June 27, 2018

In case you missed it, the second wave of Warriors has enrolled at UH. The start of the so-called bridge program — a two-course session that helps newcomers acclimate to UH while attaining college credits — began this week. Mason Mataafa, Jonah Laulu, Solo Vaipulu, Khoury Bethley, Zach Rittner, Chevan Cordeiro, Jonah Kahahawai-Welch and Kai Kaneshiro are now eligible to participate in the UH-administered workouts. (They previously were allowed to participate only in the player-run practices). The next group starts […]

Kamehameha DB commits to Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on June 26, 2018

One of the state’s top defensive backs — Tiger Peterson of Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama — told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he has accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors. Peterson, who will be a senior this fall, said he plans to graduate in December and enroll at UH in January 2019. The timetable would enable Peterson to participate in the Rainbow Warriors’ offseason conditioning program and spring training. “There were a lot of factors going into choosing Hawaii,” Peterson said. “The main […]
