Rolo wants your input

By Stephen Tsai on July 10, 2018

As the old saying goes, opinions are like belly buttons. Everyone has one. (Well, except for Jeannie, who didn’t have a navel the first few seasons of “I Dream of Jeannie.”) This time, Nick Rolovich is seeking your input. As part of a challenge, Rolovich asked the Mountain West head coaches to bring gifts representing their school/state to the media summit. In 2016, Rolovich distributed this to the other coaches: Last year, Rolo brought this: And this: Rolo’s question to […]

Respected administrative assistant leaving UH

By Stephen Tsai on July 9, 2018

UCLA is at it again. This time, it’s one of UH’s most valuable staffers — Courtney Chai — heading to Westwood. Chai has that wordy title of assistant to the associate athletic director/administrative services at UH. But she also has handled administrative work for the UH baseball and men’s volleyball teams. She has a bachelor’s degree from Loyola Marymount and a master’s from Long Beach State. “I think she’s the best,” baseball coach Mike Trapasso said. “We’ll miss her. It’s […]

Back in the saddle

By Stephen Tsai on July 8, 2018

Not sure abut the rest of you, but I try to avoid confrontations with angry sorts. And when the angry sort is a half-ton bull that does not want to be ridden, well, I think the preferred choice is to wait, as we used to say in the ’70s, for “cool heads” before getting on board. Keelan Ewaliko did wait, going on hiatus from bull riding for five years while playing football for the Warriors. But this weekend Ewaliko returned […]

Daniel said he is 6 feet, 191 pounds, and capable of running 40 yards in 4.69 seconds. The past season, Daniel threw for 2,532 yards and 24 touchdowns in a pro-style offense that features similar concepts to the Warriors’ run-and-shoot schemes. “With the changes in […]

By Stephen Tsai on July 6, 2018

The University of Hawaii baseball team’s top pitcher — Dylan Thomas — is returning to the Manoa campus for his junior season. Thomas was the Minnesota Twins’ 38th-round pick in last month’s Major League Baseball Draft for First-Year Players. They could not reach agreement on a contract before today’s signing deadline. “I’m excited to come back,” Thomas told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. “It was a cool experience, if anything, to get (drafted) this year.” NCAA Division I players are eligible for […]

Blast from the past: Handy and Freak

By Stephen Tsai on July 4, 2018

Before stretch-4s and pick-and-pop offenses, there were the UH basketball teams of the 1990s. Those ‘Bows were ahead of these times, with double posts, high-low movements and, of course, G Game. Two of the best wings from that era were Phil Handy and Alika “Freak” Smith. They were reunited this morning at a clinic at Saint Francis School. Handy recently completed a four-year stint coaching a Northern Ohio team whose best player is THE best player — LeBron James. Smith […]
