Warrior Beat: “It’s for the state”

By Stephen Tsai on September 30, 2018

The close games … the overtime battle in San Jose … the “believe” mantra … for Warrior followers, it’s starting to have an ’06-’07 vibe. Running back Dayton Furuta‘s gritty performance after not practicing the past week is a good story. Ryan Meskell‘s redemption from two missed field goals and a hooked PAT to what proved to be the game-winning 3-pointer is a better story. Asked what it was like to be a hero, Meskell said: “I’m not the hero. […]

Warrior Beat: In the bag

By Stephen Tsai on September 28, 2018

Punter Stan Gaudion shares with the Warrior Beat his must-have list for road trips: > “First thing I take is deodorant because the long flight, you get pretty smelly.” > “I always take two toothbrushes. I put one in (kicker Ryan) Meskell‘s bag and on in my bag. In case they lose my bag, I still have another toothbrush.” > “I take a lot of stuff to roll out and stretch in the hotel. To keep flexible, I take a […]

Warrior Beat: Scout Bowl

By Stephen Tsai on September 27, 2018

Before today’s scheduled departure to San Jose, the Warriors practiced for 90 minutes, then staged the Scout Bowl. The full-contact scrimmage featured redshirts and developing players. The defense took the lead, making four sacks and stopping three of the first four drives. Defensive end Zach Ritner was credited with two of the sacks. Dylan Toilolo and Jonah Laulu also delivered big hits. Led by quarterback Larry Tuileta, the offense drove 75 yards for the only touchdown, with the final 9 […]

Warrior Beat: Cooling-off period

By Stephen Tsai on September 26, 2018

Head coach Nick Rolovich knows how to have a cool time. Following a scrimmage in training camp, Rolovich hired a shave-ice vendor to provide cool treats for players, coaches and fans. This morning, Rolovich gave the signal to field specialist Gary Kaneshiro, who turned on the sprinklers while the players ran gassers — 55-yard, sideline-to-sideline sprints — following a 2-hour practice. Of course, defensive end Max Hendrie found a creative way to beat the heat yesterday:

Warrior Beat: Celebrating ’07

By Stephen Tsai on September 24, 2018

Sometimes we forget. We remember the big finishes against Boise State and Washington, but forget a nail-biting WAC opener that nearly sabotaged what would become a perfect season. We remember the stars, but forget the undersized gunners on kickoffs, and the scout players who did everything Boise State and Washington were supposed to do, and the grad assistants who analyzed videos, wrote reports and visited the classrooms of every player on the roster. We remember the on-field celebrations and the […]

Warrior Beat: “We can do better”

By Stephen Tsai on September 23, 2018

No, Saturday night’s 42-21 win over Duquesne was not always aesthetic. But the Warriors are 4-1, the eighth time in the program’s history they have won at least four of their first five games. The Warriors need to win three of their remaining eight regular-season games to clinch a berth in the Dec. 22 Hawaii Bowl. * * * * * This season, the Warriors have received surprising boosts. In the opener, rush end Kaimana Padello induced CSU linemen to […]
