By Stephen Tsai on October 24, 2018

Before Al Michaels and Ken Wilson and the first two broadcasting Leaheys and Allan Elconin and “The General,” there was Hank Greenwald. It was at the old “Termite Palace” — Honolulu Stadium — where Greenwald narrated Hawaii Islander games (and occasional UH football games) in the mid-1960s. He kept his broadcasts fun and funny. And then he was off to the mainland, where he notably had two memorable stints as the San Francisco Giants’ play-by-play announcer. Don Robbs described Greenwald […]

Warrior Beat: Tavai expected to miss Fresno game

By Stephen Tsai on October 23, 2018

The Warriors’ leading tackler — linebacker Jahlani Tavai — is expected to miss this coming week’s road game against Fresno State. “I don’t think he’ll be with us this week,” head coach Nick Rolovich said following today’s two-hour practice on the grass field. In the second quarter of Saturday’s game against Nevada, Tavai appeared to hurt a shoulder when he landed hard on the Aloha Stadium turf. He was examined in the medical tent, and spent the second half on […]

In the aftermath of a 40-22 loss to Nevada in which little went right — five drops, some mis-reads, many missed tackles — the Warriors are preparing for the next step. Here’s a look at some areas. > Health: As of this morning, there was no update on the status of linebacker Jahlani Tavai, who did not play in the second half because of what appeared to be a shoulder ailment. Earlier in the season, it was thought he would […]

Warrior Beat: Expansion football

By Stephen Tsai on October 18, 2018

With eight games in the books and five more remaining in the regular season, the Warriors are seeking to make use of a new redshirt rule to expand the active roster. The amendment allows a player to appear in up to four games and still count this as a redshirt season. “We’re going to see some guys who really aren’t freshmen anymore,” head coach Nick Rolovich said. “We want to see if there’s anyone who can help us, especially on […]

Warrior Beat: Governors’ ball

Students from Farrington High’s Friends program attended today’s UH football practice at the grass practice field. Afterward, the UH coaches and players signed autographs and posed for pictures. It was a particularly proud time for defensive end Manly “Pumba” Williams, a Farrington graduate. “It was nice to see them come out here,” Williams said. “I take pride in where I come from, where I grew up. I’m a Kalihi boy. I love it. There was no place I’d rather spend […]
