Warrior Beat: Aloha ball

By Stephen Tsai on December 14, 2018

The Warriors will practice under the lights tonight at Aloha Stadium. The 90-minute workout serves two purposes: > It gives the Warriors a chance to re-acquaint with a field they have not played on since the Nov. 17 senior night. For next week’s bowl preparation, Louisiana Tech will practice at Aloha Stadium and UH will will practice on its campus. > It allows the Warriors more recruiting time during the day.

Warrior Beat: Tavai invited to all-star game

By Stephen Tsai on December 13, 2018

Linebacker Jahlani Tavai has been invited to participate in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in the Rose Bowl. The all-star game is set for Jan. 19. Tavai’s season was abbreviated because of a shoulder injury. He compiled 82 tackles in eight games in 2018. “Right now I have to get my shoulder right and get ready for the next level,” Tavai said. “Before that, I want to give support to the team, and let them know I’ve got their back no […]

Warrior Beat: Green is back with ‘Bows

By Stephen Tsai on December 12, 2018

After missing the past weekend’s game because of “personal” reasons, junior guard Leland Green is back practicing with the basketball ‘Bows. Green eased into the flow during tonight’s two-hour practice in Gym I. During the sprint session, Green was told he could skip the final series because he appeared to be slightly winded. Green waved off the offer, then completed two full-court sprints in under the prescribed time limit while teammates cheered enthusiastically. The ‘Bows have spent the past two […]

Warrior Beat: Quick addition

By Stephen Tsai on December 11, 2018

The Warriors addressed their need for speed in the secondary with the commitment from Cortez Davis of Itawamba Community College. Here’s the skinny: > Checks the box: In a late-season switch-a-roo, Eugene Ford went to nickelback and Manu Hudson-Rasmussen moved to corner. Hudson-Rasmussen’s final UH game will be the SoFi Hawaii Bowl. The opposite corner, Rojesterman Farris II, will be a senior in 2019. Davis gives a boost to the position that also includes Zach Wilson, Kai Kaneshiro and Akil […]

Warrior Beat: Green switches to defense

By Stephen Tsai on December 10, 2018

One of the benefits of the extra bowl practices — player evaluations — is discovering a first-year Warrior who might be best suited for another position. After showing his speed and athleticism, James Green today was moved from wideout to cornerback. “He showed up when we flipped him,” head coach Nick Rolovich said. “We think he has some skill set that may be able to help us at that position. Right now he’s going to stay there.” This is final-exam […]

Game Night: UH vs. UH-Hilo

By Stephen Tsai on December 8, 2018

For the first time in 20 days, the Rainbow Warriors are back in the Stan Sheriff Center. This time, the ‘Bows are facing UH-Hilo. For the ‘Bows, who are coming off a 1-3 road trip, this game counts as part of their regular-season schedule. For the Vulcans, this is considered an exhibition. The Vulcans are expected to open with a three-guard attack, led by 6-5 James Griffin 17.3 points, 5.5 rebounds). Denhym Brooke, at 6-8, is the Vulcans’ tallest starter. […]

Warrior Beat: Problem solvers

By Stephen Tsai on December 7, 2018

We all know Pollyannas who just assume that things “take care of themselves”and “everything works out in the end.” But we all know that’s not how it works. You just can’t close your eyes, make a wish, and problems are solved. It takes people to make things work out. Two of those fixers are Jason Cvercko and Josh Omura. When the Warriors had to fill certain positions, Cvercko and Omura initiated the search. And when a couple players did not […]

Warrior Beat: Whacky Wednesday

By Stephen Tsai on December 5, 2018

Freaky Friday? No, today was Whacky Wednesday, during which several offensive and defensive players switched roles. The purpose was twofold: 1) It allowed an offensive player to see what a defensive counterpart goes through. 2) It gave the coaches a chance to see if, down the road, a receiver could be used as a cornerback. “It gave us a look at some guys who may be newer to the program, see what their skill set is,” head coach Nick Rolovich […]
