Cindy Luis covers University of Hawaii volleyball for the Star-Advertiser. She began her career as a sports journalist in Hawaii in 1981 with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and was the sports editor, assistant sports editor, columnist and beat writer during a 31-year span before the paper became the Star-Advertiser. She graduated from UCLA in 1977 with a B.A. in Communication Studies.

NCAA men’s volleyball: Hawaii athletic director David Matlin joins expanded selection committee

Hawaii athletic director David Matlin has been added to an expanded NCAA men’s volleyball tournament selection committee. This is a good thing, expanding from three to five members. In 2018 when UC Irvine was chosen over Hawaii, the committee members were from UCLA, Ohio State and NJIT. The first two had conflicts of interest since their teams were under consideration. The following was reported in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s breaking news on Monday afternoon. Hawaii men’s volleyball coach Charlie Wade has been cleared by the U.S. Center for SafeSport after a 17-month investigation into a sexual misconduct allegations regarding an underage female player during his club coaching days in the 1990s. Wade’s name was removed from the USA Volleyball’s interim measure-suspension list over the weekend. Hawaii women’s volleyball: Rainbow Wahine sign transfer setter Mylana Byrd

Hawaii has signed 6-2 setter Mylana Byrd, who is transferring from Alabama. She is enrolling at UH this spring and will have two seasons to play beginning in fall. From UH: In her two seasons at Alabama, Byrd played in 158 total sets with 844 assists, 81 digs, 80 total blocks (15-solo/65-block assist), and 71 kills.
