Cindy Luis covers University of Hawaii volleyball for the Star-Advertiser. She began her career as a sports journalist in Hawaii in 1981 with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and was the sports editor, assistant sports editor, columnist and beat writer during a 31-year span before the paper became the Star-Advertiser. She graduated from UCLA in 1977 with a B.A. in Communication Studies.

As coach Jeff Hall said at media day today, this weekend’s tournament might be the best of the NCAA events this week. The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic features No. 1 UCLA, No. 4 Pepperdine, No. 5 Hawaii, No. 11 Stanford and Saint Mary’s. The previous thread asked about the starting lineup. The latest AVCA men’s volleyball poll is here. Hawaii was voted No. 2 for a fifth straight week. Hawaii (10-0) stayed behind unanimous No. 1 Long Beach State (13-0). Congrats to Patrick Gasman, the Big West’s Defensive POW today. (BWC has digs, not blocks in their release.) From the BWC: The 6-foot-10 middle blocker averaged an incredible 3.17 blocks per set as the Rainbow Warriors improved to 8-0 on the season, matching their best start to a season under head coach Charlie Wade. Freshman opposite Filip Humler put down a career-high 10 kills with just one error and No. 2 Hawaii swept host Queens 25-13, 25-17, 25-16 in today’s nonconference men’s volleyball match at Charlotte, N.C.
