Cindy Luis covers University of Hawaii volleyball for the Star-Advertiser. She began her career as a sports journalist in Hawaii in 1981 with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and was the sports editor, assistant sports editor, columnist and beat writer during a 31-year span before the paper became the Star-Advertiser. She graduated from UCLA in 1977 with a B.A. in Communication Studies.

University of Hawaii men’s volleyball assistant coach Josh Walker was named the 2019 AVCA Assistant Coach of the Year today. Walker, a second-team AVCA All-American in 2010 for the Warriors, completed his fourth season on head coach Charlie Wade’s staff in 2019. He is the first UH assistant coach to win the award since it debuted in 2010. Former Hawaii volleyball great Emily Hartong is back in town this week competing on the AVP Tour. Hartong, an AVCA All-American and a two-time Big West player of the year, granted a video interview with Hawaii Warrior World’s Cindy Luis on Tuesday at a practice at Queen’s Beach. Hawaii outside hitter Hanna Hellvig was named Freshman of the Week today by the Big West. The Outrigger Hotels & Resorts MVP averaged 3.36 kills, 3.45 digs and 1.18 blocks per set while swinging at a .289 (37-11-90) clip. Hellvig recorded her first two career double-doubles, tallying 17 kills and 17 digs against Utah Valley and 11 kills with 12 digs versus UCLA.
