Cindy Luis covers University of Hawaii volleyball for the Star-Advertiser. She began her career as a sports journalist in Hawaii in 1981 with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and was the sports editor, assistant sports editor, columnist and beat writer during a 31-year span before the paper became the Star-Advertiser. She graduated from UCLA in 1977 with a B.A. in Communication Studies.

Sad news to pass along. Shoji called this afternoon to tell me of his illness. said he was diagnosed a few weeks ago. He spoke with his staff and players on Sunday, as well as Matlin. what he is doing is taking time off for treatment, not retiring. Jeff Hall will be doing the day-to-day operations. HIPA requires her to sign a waiver to discuss what it is, she has in the past, but new injury requires new release. they may not know anything until swelling goes down.
