Both the Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams have multiple scenarios heading into the final day of their regular seasons on Saturday. Up-and-down play by UH and some jumbled standings have made for uncertain seedings and matchups in the Big West tournament in Anaheim (and also at Long Beach State in the case of the women). Here’s how the standings look heading into Saturday’s games — at Cal State Northridge for the men (17-12, 8-7 Big West) and at home, senior […]
Hawaii junior Samuta Avea had been looking for his shot since missing five games during the middle of the Big West season with an injury. He found it during a critical time on Thursday night. Avea scored a career-high 18 points and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with three seconds left in the Rainbow Warriors’ 67-65 win at UC Davis. Avea hit all four of his 3-pointers in the game’s final 3:45 as Hawaii closed out the game on an 18-3 […]
The Stan Sheriff Center is a great place to be this week. From Wednesday through Saturday, there’s a meaningful being game played in the SSC, with the long-awaited men’s volleyball matchup of No. 1 Hawaii vs. No. 2 BYU anchoring things on Thursday and Friday. The biggest matches here since UH-Long Beach State in last year’s Big West tournament final could very well serve as a national championship preview. It’s also senior week for the Rainbow Wahine basketball team, which […]
As a player, Carl English never had a senior night, and that is to the dismay of many University of Hawaii basketball fans who like to speculate on what might have happened if English had come back for his final season of eligibility, 2003-04. To them, it was a waste, because English was not picked in the NBA Draft. What they seem to forget, though, is that English got something more important than a senior night at UH celebrating his […]
Senior nights have not gone the way of the Hawaii men’s basketball team of late. Saturday night’s 49-43 loss to UC Riverside was the Rainbow Warriors’ third straight downer of a result in home finales. UH had its chances, as the teams swapped the lead down the stretch until the Highlanders (16-15, 6-9 Big West) came away with the better late-game execution and points down the stretch. >> PHOTO GALLERY: HAWAII VS. UC Riverside spoiled Hawaii’s Senior Night with a 49-43 victory in the Stan Sheriff Center. The ‘Bows took a 40-39 lead with 4:38 to play when Eddie Stansberry hit three free throws. But the Highlanders scored 10 of the next 13 points to win going away. The Highlanders improved to 16-15 and 6-9 in the Big West. The ‘Bows fell to 16-12 and 7-7. * * * * * After 20 minutes, it’s all tied at 24. Thoughts: > As […]
Carl English never got a senior season with the Hawaii basketball team. Saturday night will be the next-best thing for the recently retired Canadian great, as he will be the honorary game captain when the Rainbow Warriors take on UC Riverside on senior night at the Stan Sheriff Center. English, like Thursday’s game captain Aaron Valdes, is a former conference tournament most valuable player who made a notable return to the islands this week. While Valdes has made periodic trips […]
Hawaii’s first attempt at a small-ball lineup didn’t go so well on Thursday night. The quicker lineup — UH started three guards, and two quicker post players — quickly fell behind Cal State Fullerton. UH reverted to its larger lineup after a few minutes, but that, too, was at first only marginally effective. Some honest-to-goodness fullcourt pressure, though? That did the trick in igniting the Rainbow Warriors back in the game, and ultimately to a 70-59 win over the Titans […]
