In lieu of any actual University of Hawaii sporting events this week — or for the foreseeable future — we thought we would try something different and fun. We’re making an attempt to settle a debate. What was the greatest Hawaii men’s basketball team of all time? Some felt the most recent NCAA Tournament edition, the Rainbow Warriors of 2015-16, achieved that distinction by becoming the first team in program history to win a tourney game and setting a program […]
Now that the 2019-20 season is officially done — not in the fashion anyone envisioned, but still — let’s take a look at some of the final numbers for the 17-13 (8-8 Big West) Rainbow Warriors. >> First-team All-Big West shooting guard Eddie Stansberry led the Rainbow Warriors with 15.9 points per game, ranking second among Big West players for the full season (Big West Player of the Year Lamine Diane did not qualify for that tally, as he became eligible just […]
Some 56 University of Hawaii student-athletes were likely impacted more than the hundreds of others with Thursday’s news of NCAA sports championships being canceled through the spring. The seniors and graduate students. Some were at the tail end of their college careers, like the five basketball players who had the Big West tournaments pulled out from underneath them. Others were less than halfway through their season, like baseball and softball. Barring sports being reinstated in the coming weeks, or some […]
UPDATE: The NCAA officially canceled all spring sports championships, which appears to effectively end all seasonal University of Hawaii sports. Most notably for UH, the Hawaii men’s volleyball team will be unable to try for a title a year after reaching the NCAA championship game. UH also had top-five-ranked teams in beach volleyball and women’s water polo. The following is posted on the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s breaking news. The Big West Conference is not allowing any “non-essential” people — a list that includes fans, bands and cheerleaders — to attend the league’s men’s and women’s basketball tournaments this week. The mandate is in response to fears over COVID-19. The Big West notified the participating teams this afternoon that only players, coaches, referees, “essential” personnel and media will be allowed to attend the games. #HawaiiMBB forward Samuta Avea on […]
March Madness is upon us. Not just for the Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams, mind you — they are both in action in the Big West tournament this week in Southern California — but for everyone involved in the entire slew of events going on below. It is truly sport crossover season (check out the number of categories checked off above). But who’s still buzzing from that epic men’s volleyball five-setter with BYU at the Stan Sheriff Center on Friday? […]
Eddie Stansberry headed up Hawaii men’s basketball’s postseason honors by being named to All-Big West first team on Monday morning. The senior shooting guard, who ranks No. 4 on the UH career 3-point list and leads the team with 15.9 points per game, became UH’s first first-teamer since Noah Allen in 2016-17. His 90 3s this year is third in a UH single season. Senior forward/center Zigmars Raimo (9.3 points, 6.8 rebounds per game, 50 steals) was named an All-BWC […]
Sixteen games of conference play brought the Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams to the same place on Saturday. That being, the 4 seed in next week’s Big West tournaments. With an 86-82 loss at Cal State Northridge for the men (8-8 Big West) and a 75-58 win over Cal Poly on senior night for the women (9-7), both squads landed pretty squarely in the middle of the pack. In the Rainbow Warriors’ case, that meant a matchup against UC […]
