When you’re taking a foreign tour to Australia, whom better to hear advice from than a native Australian? Ten-year NBA veteran Patty Mills has taken a liking to offseasons in Hawaii — a convenient stopping point between his country/continent and the U.S. Mainland — and his friendship and Saint Mary’s ties with UH coach Eran Ganot have meant the San Antonio Spurs guard has been a semi-regular presence around the Stan Sheriff Center during the last few summers. Mills got in a […]

Carl English has unfinished business in his homeland. The 37-year-old former Hawaii basketball standout, and reigning National Basketball League MVP, indicated through the Twitter page of his professional team, the St. John’s Edge, that he is game for at least one more season in Canada before calling it a career. “Carl English is back,” said the post, which English retweeted. 🚨 BREAKING 🚨 Ryder, Kirsten and Kylie English have a special announcement!#UnfinishedBusiness@cenglish23 pic.twitter.com/nckFCMIeJd — St. John's Edge (@stjohnsedge) July 30, […]

We’re in the thick of the college basketball schedule waiting game. Right around July and August, 353 Division I programs steadily roll out their nonconference (and sometimes full) slates, usually announcing it on Twitter. About 75 teams have released their out-of-conference schedules so far. Hawaii is not among them; only Long Beach State and UC Irvine have done so among Big West teams. If we go by the first three years of the Eran Ganot era, UH will release its […]
The basketball ‘Bows will play Utah in the Nov. 22 opening round of the Wooden Legacy tournament in Fullerton, Calif. The ‘Bows open the Diamond Head Classic against UNLV. On the road The recruiting trail is far and wide. The UH basketball coaches are spread out in pursuit of prospects, with stopovers in New York and South America.
UCLA is at it again. This time, it’s one of UH’s most valuable staffers — Courtney Chai — heading to Westwood. Chai has that wordy title of assistant to the associate athletic director/administrative services at UH. But she also has handled administrative work for the UH baseball and men’s volleyball teams. She has a bachelor’s degree from Loyola Marymount and a master’s from Long Beach State. “I think she’s the best,” baseball coach Mike Trapasso said. “We’ll miss her. It’s […]
Before stretch-4s and pick-and-pop offenses, there were the UH basketball teams of the 1990s. Those ‘Bows were ahead of these times, with double posts, high-low movements and, of course, G Game. Two of the best wings from that era were Phil Handy and Alika “Freak” Smith. They were reunited this morning at a clinic at Saint Francis School. Handy recently completed a four-year stint coaching a Northern Ohio team whose best player is THE best player — LeBron James. Smith […]
