Warrior Beat: Q visits the ‘Bows

By Stephen Tsai on August 30, 2018

Quincy Smith, a key member of the UH basketball team that advanced to the round of 32 in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, visited with the Rainbow Warriors today. Smith said he will be playing in Lithuania this coming season. It is the same league where LaMelo Ball and LiAngelo Ball played this past year. Smith started all 34 UH games in 2015-2016. He scored a career-high 19 points in the opening-round upset of California. * * * * * The […]

‘Bows drop final tour game

By Brian McInnis on August 16, 2018

The Sydney Kings prevented the Hawaii men’s basketball team from breaking even in its final game of the Down Under tour. UH trailed by nine at halftime, cut it to four points after three quarters, but gave up a 12-0 run in the fourth as the Kings won going away, 82-65, Friday night at Abottsleigh College (Thursday night in Hawaii), leaving UH to finish 1-3 on its foreign expedition. The Rainbow Warriors got 15 points from shooting guard Eddie Stansberry, […]

Breaking down the 2018-19 nonconference

By Brian McInnis on August 15, 2018

It’s here. On the heels of UCLA announcing that UH will play at Pauley Pavilion this season, UH was compelled to release its entire 2018-19 men’s basketball schedule. And, honestly, at this point there were only a couple of gaps to fill in. Well, those two remaining gaps (Mississippi Valley State and Alabama A&M) were pretty underwhelming. Then again, UCLA is UCLA, whether it’s home or away. Without further ado, a game-by-game look at the 2018-19 nonconference slate. Nov. 2: […]

Game 3 sprees

By Brian McInnis on August 15, 2018

Game 3 was good to both the Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams on Wednesday night (Tuesday back home) in their respective foreign tours. The Rainbow Warriors put together their best effort of their Down Under tour for a 70-52 win over the Centre of Excellence — the former academy of UH freshmen Mate Colina and Owen Hulland — in the Australian capital of Canberra. Colina scored 14 points in his homecoming, while point guard Drew Buggs added 11. Here’s the link […]

A slice of Humboldt pie

By Brian McInnis on August 13, 2018

Back in the 2015-16 season, UH Hilo made a guest appearance in the round-robin format of the modern Rainbow Classic, playing Montana State, which word had it did not want to play Coastal Carolina, a late addition to the field. That was it for the Vulcans; they obliged for that one game vs. the MSU Bobcats and went back to the Big Island, although they returned to play Manoa in a stand-alone game the next month. Three years later, it […]

‘Bows edged in Melbourne

By Brian McInnis on August 13, 2018

In wrenching fashion, the Hawaii men’s basketball team remained winless on its Down Under tour on Monday night (late Sunday in the islands). UH led the Melbourne Tigers of SEABL (Australia’s second-tier pro league) most of the way, including by nine points in the fourth quarter, only to see the host team hit a barrage of 3s late and put in the go-ahead shot with 18 seconds left for an 86-85 comebacker at the Veneto Athletic Club in Australia’s second-largest […]

‘Bows begin tour competition

By Brian McInnis on August 10, 2018

It looks like it’s been fun. Now come the games. After an enjoyable day discovering Brisbane and the Gold Coast in the upper Australian state of Queensland, the Rainbow Warriors buckled down for the first of four games on their tour. They play the Brisbane Bullets of the top Australian pro league, the National Basketball League (NBL), at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Because Australia is a day ahead, that means it’s tonight (Friday) back in Hawaii, with a 10:30 p.m. tipoff. […]

Off to a land Down Under

By Brian McInnis on August 8, 2018

After months of advance work, both University of Hawaii basketball teams have left for Down Under — Australia for the Rainbow Warriors, New Zealand and Australia for the Rainbow Wahine. The UH men departed today for Australia (10-hour flight, first stop, Brisbane) while the Rainbow Wahine have already arrived in Auckland (nine-hour flight) and play their first of four games tonight (Wednesday) at 7:30 p.m. HST (it’ll be 5:30 p.m. Thursday local time in Auckland). For the Wahine game, look for […]
