The Warriors observed the four Fs today — football, family, friends and food. Following today’s 90-minute walk-through session, the Warriors feasted on a turkey brunch. They then departed to the airport for their scheduled afternoon flight to San Diego in advance of Saturday’s game against the Aztecs. The Warriors are expected to arrive in San Diego late tonight. A heavier practice is scheduled for tomorrow. Meanwhile, a two-hour drive away, the UH basketball team faces Utah tonight in the opening […]
In darkness, the basketball ‘Bows departed the Manoa campus this morning for the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. The ‘Bows will be playing four games during the 10-day trip, opening against Utah in the three-game Wooden Legacy tournament on Thursday. The trip ends next week in the arena John Wooden had historic success — UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion. The ‘Bows insist they have had helpful preparation for their first regular-season road trip. In August, they took a four-game trip to Australia. […]
A neutral observer could have reasonably expected the Hawaii basketball team to go 3-1, perhaps even 4-0, through its first four games. The Rainbow Warriors (3-1) did just that with Sunday night’s 85-68 defeat of visiting Northern Arizona. Their only setback to this point was a 68-51 loss to North Texas. But that one was concerning, as UH looked a step or two slow against the most athletic team they’ve faced thus far. Well, now we find out if that […]
The Rainbow Warriors defeated Northern Arizona, 85-68, to improve to 3-1. Of note: > After missing his first five 3-pointers, Eddie Stansberry hit three in the first half, two more after the intermission and finished with 19 points. > The ‘Bows set the tone early with aggressive inside play. They hit their first 10 shots from the paint and 14 of their first 16 near the rim. > The Lumberjacks tried to double the ball screens, freeing the post. Drew […]
Deepest apologies, but it’s been a hectic week. So, in review: On Wednesday, post player Zigmars Raimo celebrated his 21st birthday. In what is a UH basketball tradition, the birthday honoree is serenaded and then presented with a cupcake. And, yes, you’re not having a flashback. As part of the practice rotation, the ‘Bows took a turn this week in Klum Gym. And, yes, it’s still as stuffy as it was back in the sweaty heyday. So, where are the […]
Sunday’s stories about football managers spurred this response from a reader and reminds us that unsung heroes have been making sports events possible for a very long time: Thank you for The Longest Day article. It brought back many memories from long ago when I was both a basketball and baseball manager for the Washington Huskies. It was much simpler in my time, 1956-1960. Basketball, we traveled with 12 players, 3 coaches, 1 trainer and a manager. My senior manager […]
There was a connection to be drawn between the moth that flitted freely about the Stan Sheriff Court, with public address man Billy V in hot pursuit, and Hawaii attempting to chase down the dynamic North Texas team that darted off to a big lead on Sunday. Billy V eventually caught the moth, but Hawaii never came close to running down North Texas. The Rainbow Warriors absorbed a 68-51 beatdown in the de facto championship game of the Outrigger Resorts […]
Ryan Woolridge amassed 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals to lead North Texas to a 68-51 victory over the UH in the final round of the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic. UH falls to 2-1. * * * * * The Mean Green did not play nicely in the first half, storming to a 35-17 lead. Even without their best player, the Green effectively attacked the rim and kept the ‘Bows out of their usual offensive flow. The […]
