Game Night: UH vs. UH-Hilo

By Stephen Tsai on December 8, 2018

For the first time in 20 days, the Rainbow Warriors are back in the Stan Sheriff Center. This time, the ‘Bows are facing UH-Hilo. For the ‘Bows, who are coming off a 1-3 road trip, this game counts as part of their regular-season schedule. For the Vulcans, this is considered an exhibition. The Vulcans are expected to open with a three-guard attack, led by 6-5 James Griffin 17.3 points, 5.5 rebounds). Denhym Brooke, at 6-8, is the Vulcans’ tallest starter. […]

UH vs. UHH, an annotated history

By Brian McInnis on December 8, 2018

We’re approaching mid-December, which can mean only one thing. It’s time for the Hawaii-Hawaii Hilo grudge match! In all seriousness, this now-annual series has not been competitive, even as Division I-II crossover games go — the average margin of victory is 25 points for Manoa in the last six meetings. Manoa’s little brother Hilo is here for the sixth straight year, and the two are meeting up for a regular-season game for the seventh time in eight years. But that […]

Warrior Beat: Back in action

By Stephen Tsai on December 1, 2018

After a week off, the Warriors today worked out for 90 minutes, the first of 15 NCAA-allotted practices in advance of the Dec. 22 SoFi Hawaii Bowl. UH coach Nick Rolovich said he views the bowl practices as “another spring practice.” The Warriors are using the extra workouts to give meaningful reps to freshmen, redshirts and developing players. Consider this an advance tutorial for next next season. “You don’t want to waste one opportunity to get better,” Rolovich said. “If […]

Game Night: UH vs. UCLA

By Stephen Tsai on November 28, 2018

Tough night in Westwood for the ‘Bows, who fell 80-61 to UCLA in Pauley Pavilion. Prince Ali stole the show, pouring in a season-high 23 points. He started off with four all-swish 3s and finished with a thunderous dunk. The ‘Bows bench had some nice moments. Owen Hulland had a 14 points, and Samuta Avea had a run with jumpers and aggressive defense. The ‘Bows return home tomorrow, having gone 1-3 on this trip. Next game is Dec. 8 against […]

How have ‘Bows fared at Pac-12 schools?

By Brian McInnis on November 27, 2018

With the Hawaii men’s basketball team taking on UCLA at historic Pauley Pavilion on Wednesday, now might be a good time to examine how the Rainbow Warriors have fared historically in road games against the Pac-12 Conference. The first thing one notices poring through the UH media guide is that there’ve been almost none of them in the 21st century. In fact, going into Wednesday, there’ve been all but three true UH road games against the westernmost Power Five league […]

Game Day: ‘Bows vs. Bulldogs

By Stephen Tsai on November 25, 2018

The ‘Bows struggled with consistency — and Fresno State’s full-court press — in a 79-64 loss in the Wooden Legacy. The Bulldogs’ press impeded the ‘Bows from quickly sliding into their offensive sets. That may or may not have been a factor in the ‘Bows’ 6-for-26 shooting from behind the 3-point arc. Later, the Bulldogs used first-step moves to burst into the lane for easy baskets or to draw fouls. The ‘Bows had five players in double figures, led by […]

Game Night: UH vs. Seton Hall

By Stephen Tsai on November 23, 2018

Seton Hall held off UH’s second-half rally for a 64-54 victory in the semifinals of the Wooden Legacy. The ‘Bows closed to 47-44 on Eddie Stansberry’s 3-pointer with 6:28 to play. But then Seton Hall post Sandro Mamukelashvili converted his first 3 of the season to trigger a 13-2 run. The ‘Bows will play Fresno State in the third-place game on Sunday at 11 a.m. Hawaii time. * * * * * The ‘Bows were down for only the second […]

‘Bows impress, move onto next challenge

By Brian McInnis on November 23, 2018

Hawaii got its team Thanksgiving meal out of the way early. The Rainbow Warriors ate together the eve of the holiday and were too busy for actual festivities on Thursday, but they found reason to be thankful — a 90-79 upset of Utah in the opening round of the Wooden Legacy at Cal State Fullerton. This was a pretty sizable upset. The Pac-12 team was favored by nine points and with about 10 minutes left, the Runnin’ Utes trailed by […]
