2019 Diamond Head field revealed

By Brian McInnis on December 21, 2018

A day out from the 10th edition of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, the 11th DHC field was revealed. Host Hawaii will be joined by Ball State (Mid-American), Boise State (Mountain West), Georgia Tech (Atlantic Coast), Houston (American Athletic), Portland (West Coast), UTEP (Conference USA) and Washington (Pac-12). Boise State (2013) and UTEP (2011) are returning participants. The Broncos (who now boast former UH assistant Chris Acker as an assistant coach) defeated the Rainbow Warriors 62-61 in the 2013 […]

‘Bows break in Gym II

By Brian McInnis on December 20, 2018

It had that new car smell. Lighting, acoustics, temperature, playing surface, shot clocks, cameras, you name it. The new and improved Gym II was an upgrade in all facets over the previous version of itself. The Hawaii men’s basketball team became the first outfit to use the refurbished, climate-controlled facility this afternoon. “Unbelievable,” was the general takeaway from the players and coaches. The place looked pretty accurate to the mock-up (if you click that link, scroll down for the photo) […]

Sunday’s only drama is Drammeh

By Brian McInnis on December 16, 2018

The drama on the court was over quickly Sunday. Truthfully, it never was there to begin with against punchless Mississippi Valley State, which rates No. 350 of 353 Division I teams on KenPom.com. But the off-court drama? It lingered into the Manoa night, courtesy of one Sheriff Drammeh. UH coach Eran Ganot said before the game that the senior guard is suspended for an unspecified violation of team rules. After UH (6-4) dispatched MVSU (2-11) with ease, 76-51, the most […]

Game Day: UH vs. Mississippi Valley State

By Stephen Tsai on December 16, 2018

The 5-4 Rainbow Warriors will be without their best perimeter defender for today’s game against Mississippi Valley State. Sheriff Drammeh is suspended for violating undisclosed rules, head coach Eran Ganot confirmed. This is the final game before next week’s prestigious Diamond Head Classic. The UH football team will be introduced in a ceremony at halftime.

Whacking the SWAC

By Brian McInnis on December 16, 2018

The Hawaii basketball team is undefeated all-time against teams in three Division I conferences. They are the Colonial Athletic Association (4-0), the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (16-0), and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (22-0). The perfect mark against the last of those three is on the line twice this month, including tonight as the Rainbow Warriors take on Mississippi Valley State of the SWAC at 5 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. After the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, Alabama A&M comes […]

Warrior Beat: Green is back with ‘Bows

By Stephen Tsai on December 12, 2018

After missing the past weekend’s game because of “personal” reasons, junior guard Leland Green is back practicing with the basketball ‘Bows. Green eased into the flow during tonight’s two-hour practice in Gym I. During the sprint session, Green was told he could skip the final series because he appeared to be slightly winded. Green waved off the offer, then completed two full-court sprints in under the prescribed time limit while teammates cheered enthusiastically. The ‘Bows have spent the past two […]

Gym II renovations nearing completion

By Brian McInnis on December 12, 2018

A major facilities upgrade is nearly complete at the Manoa lower campus. Within perhaps a week, a climate-controlled, fully refurbished Gym II will be ready for use by the Hawaii men’s and women’s basketball teams. That’s the primary practice facility on campus outside of the Stan Sheriff Center. It’s a $9-10 million project for Gym II and I. Gym I renovations will commence once Gym II is done. UH athletic director David Matlin has called the improvements “game-changers.” One of […]

‘Bows survive a Vulcan scare

By Brian McInnis on December 8, 2018

The collective vibe of those leaving the Stan Sheriff Center: relief and concern. Maybe more of the latter than the former. The final from Saturday night: Hawaii 82, Hawaii Hilo 75. It was, by far, the closest a UH-UHH game came at the Sheriff. Never had the Division II Vulcans played the Rainbows within single digits in 11 official all-time meetings. This was a program UH pasted by 51 points five years ago. For a victory, it was a dim […]
