Long Beach State made its presence felt from the get-go on Thursday night. So did the officiating crew. Yet it was Hawaii that prevailed in the Big West clash, 74-57, thanks to a relentless effort from its bench players. The stat of the night: 35 bench points for the hosts, 10 for the visitors. This was a night in which shooting came at a premium for both teams, UH shooting just north of 40 percent and LBSU just under it. […]
It was 25 seasons ago when the Rainbow Warriors ended a drought and upset BYU in the WAC title game to earn a berth in the 1994 NCAA Tournament. It was a time when Jamie Dixon was the third assistant coach, Tony Maroney was a true back-to-the-basket 7-foot center, Phil Handy was a tough-as-rails defender, John Molle riled opponents’ fans while earning his own theme song (“Mo-lay, Mo-lay,” a parody of Buster Poindexter’s “Hot, Hot, Hot” chorus) and, of course, […]
Each basketball season I make a point of watching at least one University of Hawaii game from the stands instead of courtside at the Stan Sheriff Center. It’s not just a ploy to try to get a free trim via the who-needs-a-haircut promotion, or, when the blimp makes its bombing run, coupons for those mystery meat fast-food tacos I really like. No, I like to remind myself what it was like watching these games before it became a job. Usually […]
It was a nice gesture for UH to recognize Australia Day before last night’s basketball game. Of the 82 international players on 2018-2019 UH rosters, 14 are from Australia. That’s second to Canada (22) in the number of international players represented from a foreign country. Of the men’s sports, the football team has the most Australians — defensive end Max Hendrie, kicker Ryan Meskell and punters Stan Gaudion and Ben Scruton. After crunching the numbers, it should be noted: > […]
Drew Buggs really, really didn’t want to give UC Davis any life. On Wednesday against UC Irvine, he’d seen what could happen when that happened. So when Davis was hanging around within 10 points in crunch time, Buggs slammed the coffin shut on the Aggies and reigning Big West player of the year TJ Shorts II. He unleashed several minutes of scoring and playmaking that represented some of the best ball of his young career, taking the Rainbow Warriors home […]
Big west play continues with tonight’s basketball game between UC Davis and UH in the Stan Sheriff Center. Tipoff is at 7:05 p.m. * * * * * The ‘Bows (11-7, 2-2 Big West) are rebounding from Wednesday’s come-from-ahead loss in overtime in which they blew a 14-point lead in the second half. The turning point was a hook-and-hold call against UH forward Jack Purchase. It was a controversial call — not horrendous, like a Saints-Rams non-call — but still, […]
The best thing about Wednesday night for Hawaii? The season goes on. Unlike UH’s bitter encounter with UC Irvine in the first round of the Big West tournament last March, the Rainbow Warriors will live to fight another day after a disheartening 75-74 overtime loss to the Anteaters at the Stan Sheriff Center. Here’s the final sequence of this tight @BigWestMBB battle — Max Hazzard with the go-ahead jumper for UC Irvine and the response that wouldn’t drop for #HawaiiMBB. […]
The Anteaters were sort of a party pooper for the ‘Bows last year. They ruined the ‘Bows’ senior night, then eliminated them from the Big West tournament. But even before that, the Anteaters were considered one of the league’s circle-the-calendar opponents. That should make for a feisty night in the Stan Sheriff Center. “They’re a contender to win the championship, and we want to be a contender, as well,” UH point guard Brocke Stepteau said. “It’s a great opportunity for […]
