We’re in the thick of summer, which means it’s time to take stock of what some former Hawaii men’s basketball players did over the past several months. Yep, it’s ‘Bows in the pros, post-2018-19 edition. By Brian McInnis on June 3, 2019

The 2019 class of the UH Sports Circle of Honor is set. The names should be familiar: former Hawaii basketball Fab Fiver and head coach Bob Nash; former athletic director Hugh Yoshida; former national champion diver Emma Friesen; and longtime UH basketball booster Carolyn Berry Wilson. The four, making up the 37th class into the CoH, will be officially enshrined during homecoming weekend, including the Sept. 21 football game against Central Arkansas. Stephen Tsai’s full writeup on the four inductees […]

When it comes to NBA teams and making deep runs into the postseason, it helps to have a Phil Handy handy. Handy, the University of Hawaii guard-turned NBA player development guru, will make a fifth straight appearance in the NBA Finals today when the Toronto Raptors take the court (3 p.m. Hawaii time) for Game 1 against the defending champion Golden State Warriors in Toronto. Handy was with the Cleveland Cavaliers the last four years during the Cavs’ run of […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Concerning recruiting

By Brian McInnis on May 18, 2019

Any takers out there? About two months ago, I wrote about how this spring is a critical juncture for the direction of the Hawaii men’s basketball program as it pertains to recruiting. Would the Rainbow Warriors receive a talent infusion commensurate with their peers in the Big West — the Irvines, Long Beaches, and Santa Barbaras — to break a spell of so-so regular-season performances and one-and-done outings in the conference tournament the last three years? Well, in the weeks since, […]

By Stephen Tsai on May 16, 2019

Former UH forward Jack Purchase has signed with the Melbourne Tigers of Australia’s National Basketball League 1. The NBL1 is a level below the premier NBL. “Feels pretty good to be back home playing,” Purchase texted to the Warrior Beat. “Played for the Tigers in the juniors and feels good to be able to put the Tigers’ jersey back on again.” The NBL1’s games are played in Melbourne and Tasmania, Purchase said. Purchase earned a bachelor’s degree this past weekend. […]

By Stephen Tsai on May 11, 2019

Three former UH basketball players — Sheriff Drammeh, Brocke Stepteau and Jack Purchase — earned degrees today and are ready for the next phase of their lives. Drammeh has reached an agreement with a sports agency in Europe and is expected to play professionally over there. Purchase is headed back to his native Australia to audition for the professional league over there. The free-agent period is coming up. Stepteau is exploring options in basketball and music. He is accompanying Purchase […]
