Stan Sheriff Center: A Quarter Century of Thrills

By Dave Reardon on October 9, 2019

On Oct. 21 it will be 25 years since the Stan Sheriff Center, then known as the Special Events Arena, hosted its first event. In today’s Star-Advertiser, Cindy Luis recounts that women’s volleyball match between the University of Hawaii and San Jose State (you might be surprised when you’re reminded who played in that match). Also, I have a story about how the SSC came to be, and what it meant in 1994 to a rookie ticket office employee named […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Zigmars Raimo, Drew Buggs named captains

By Stephen Tsai on October 8, 2019

Two fourth-year Rainbow Warriors — post Zigmars Raimo and Drew Buggs — have been named captains for the 2019-2020 season. Head coach Eran Ganot described the selection as a “joint process” involving players’ input and leadership criteria. Raimo, a 6-8 senior from Latvia, has expanded his game from a being a low-post dweller to a stretch-four creator. He said he has worked on outside shooting, left-handed drives, and perimeter passing. During his freshman season, Raimo weighed as much as 252 […]

By Brian McInnis on October 7, 2019

It’s a pivotal week in conference play for both the Hawaii football and women’s volleyball teams. The Rainbow Warriors, well rested coming off a bye week and still feeling good following the 54-3 beatdown of Nevada in Reno, head up to Boise to take on the No. 14 Broncos on The Blue, a place they’ve never won. The No. 19 Rainbow Wahine? All they have to do is head up the Central California Coast for matchups on consecutive days with […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Paul George carries memories of Sheriff Center

By Brian McInnis on October 2, 2019

When Paul George played at Fresno State in the late 2000s, both the Bulldogs and Hawaii struggled to contend in the Western Athletic Conference. UH and FSU, longtime conference rivals, actually made pretty good opponents for each other. Bob Nash’s ‘Bows had an explosive talent in Roderick Flemings and Fresno State had one of its own in a youngster named Paul George. But both squads struggled to make that translate into team success. >> VIDEO, PHOTOS OF CLIPPERS CAMP AT […]

By Brian McInnis on September 29, 2019

It was fitting that the 2019-20 Hawaii men’s basketball team got in its first practice of the season on a brand-new floor. There was a new theme in the lineup, a new assistant coach, and six new players on the roster to go with the sparkling court in the Stan Sheriff Center in the first full practice of the 2019-20 preseason on Saturday. Fifth-year coach Eran Ganot is going with a “go big or go home” theme to begin the […]

The Rainbow Wahine held their first full practice on Wednesday. The Rainbow Warriors get going on Saturday. The UH men, under fifth-year coach Eran Ganot, open their season Nov. 8 vs. Florida A&M in the Rainbow Classic. The […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Junior college recruiting issues persist

By Brian McInnis on September 25, 2019

The recruitment of junior college standouts was once the go-to, a preferred method of securing talent for the Hawaii men’s basketball program. Think Bob Nash, Trevor Ruffin, Tony Maroney, A.C. Carter, Michael Kuebler and Matt Lojeski. More recently, Bill Amis, Vander Joaquim, Garrett Nevels and Roderick Bobbitt came out of JUCOs to become productive players. Recruiting JUCOs often comes with its own set of positives and negatives. JUCO players often offer an immediate infusion of ready-to-play talent, but usually only […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: JC guard Madut granted NCAA waiver, will join ‘Bows in January

By Stephen Tsai on September 24, 2019

The NCAA has approved a hardship waiver that will allow guard Junior Madut to join the Rainbow Warrior basketball team in January. Madut had signed with the ‘Bows in April. Madut was born in South Sudan, grew up in Australia, attended a prep school in Florida, and played the past two seasons at Eastern Florida State College. A hardship was sought because of time Madut spent taking care of a family situation after high school. “He was clearly a hardship […]
