Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii football faces Army on senior night, basketball teams play 2 doubleheaders

By Brian McInnis on November 28, 2019

First and foremost, happy Thanksgiving all. In this week’s delayed edition of the Forecast (I got a little sidetracked at the Maui Invitational) some post-Turkey Day action makes for a busy weekend. Fortunately, there was nothing on the UH calendar in the first half of the week. Of course, there’s the UH football team’s senior night battle against Army, concluding the regular season. Note the late start (7:30 p.m.) for the CBS Sports Network-televised game. The Rainbow Warriors (8-4, 5-3 […]

Hawaii basketball: Rainbow Warriors, Wahine split turnover-filled doubleheader

By Dave Reardon on November 24, 2019

Taking care of the ball was a problem at times for both University of Hawaii basketball teams on Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center. For the women, it was a big part of why the Rainbow Wahine ended up on the wrong end of a 74-57 score against Texas Southern. For the men, a flurry of giveaways early against New Orleans served as a wake-up call, and the Rainbow Warriors recovered well enough to right the ship and win 79-71. […]

Eddie Stansberry scored 24 points and the Rainbow Warriors made a decisive 7-0 run late in the second half for a 79-71 victory over New Orleans tonight in the Stan Sheriff Center. Point guard Drew Buggs did not hit his first field goal until 11:23 to play, but he finished with 11 points and seven assists. The ‘Bows improved to 4-2. The Privateers fell to 1-4. * * * * * UNO was trying to cut into a 68-63 when […]

Hawaii basketball falls at Illinois; Eddie Stansberry honored by Big West

By Stephen Tsai on November 18, 2019

Hawaii senior guard Eddie Stansberry was named the Big West’s Player of the Week after averaging 27.0 points in victories over Pacific and Portland State. But the celebration was short-lived. Stansberry and point guard Drew Buggs combined to shoot seven of 26 in the Rainbow Warriors’ 66-53 road loss to Illinois today in Champaign, Ill. It was the ‘Bows’ eighth setback in as many meetings against the Illini. It was tied at 26 at the intermission, and the ‘Bows cut […]

Rainbow Forecast: Conference championships on the line for Hawaii football, volleyball

By Brian McInnis on November 18, 2019

It’s a big week in this edition of the Forecast — championships are on the line for the Hawaii football and women’s volleyball teams. The Rainbow Warriors, coming off an important 21-7 win at UNLV, will play their biggest home game in years on Saturday at Aloha Stadium against San Diego State. Should UH find a way to top SDSU, it will win the Mountain West West Division and earn a spot in the MWC title game for the first time. […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: No pressure for methodical Rainbow Warriors against Portland State

By Dave Reardon on November 15, 2019

Chris Gerlufsen’s first words to reporters after Hawaii’s 83-75 victory over Portland State on Friday indicated that UH’s win was hard-earned. “Nothing is easy,” Gerlufsen said as he looked at the box score, and then the cameras. “We knew it was gonna be a 40-minute dogfight.” The Vikings apply relentless pressure, and sometimes it worked, forcing UH turnovers. Hawaii gave Portland State a lot of chances — first and second chances. But the Vikings didn’t take advantage of enough of […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Roderick Bobbitt presses on as professional

By Brian McInnis on November 15, 2019

Roderick Bobbitt knows a thing or two about the press that the Hawaii basketball team will face tonight against Portland State. He was a part of it. Or, rather, the version of it that PSU coach Barret Peery employed at Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College when he and Bobbitt were there in 2013-14. “It’s going to be good. I came to try to spoil my former coach’s visit to Hawaii,” said Bobbitt, the point guard of UH’s 2015-16 NCAA Tournament […]
