Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii women’s volleyball heads to Wisconsin regional; hoops teams host doubleheader Sunday

By Brian McInnis on December 9, 2019

For the first time in what feels like a while, it’s a light week in the Forecast. However, it’s a heavy week for the Hawaii women’s volleyball team, which earned its first regional berth since 2015 by dropping only a single set across two NCAA home matches with Northern Colorado and San Diego over the weekend. The reward for the 12th-seeded Rainbow Wahine? A trip to Madison, Wisc., and a matchup with fifth-seeded Nebraska on Friday. So far, the only […]

By Warrior World on December 7, 2019

A tie game at halftime turned into a blowout victory for No. 13 Oregon, which ran away from Hawaii 89-64 in a nonconference men’s basketball game on Saturday in Eugene, Ore. Eddie Stansberry had a game-high 24 points for Hawaii (6-3), which dropped to 1-32 all-time against ranked teams on the road. Stansberry came out hot hitting four of his first five attempts from 3 and had 14 points at halftime as Hawaii stayed even with the Ducks at 34-all […]

Hawaii men’s basketball: Jesse Nakanishi embraces assistant duties on staff

By Brian McInnis on December 2, 2019

“Next man up, every man up” has been a mantra of the Hawaii men’s basketball team for the entirety of Eran Ganot’s tenure as head coach of the Rainbow Warriors. That was proven true in an unusual and unexpected way over the first month of the 2019-20 season. When Ganot stepped away from the program on Nov. 6, two days before the season opener for unspecified medical leave, it caused a domino effect. Chris Gerlufsen, who was hired by Ganot […]

Rainbow Forecast: Hawaii football back in Boise for Mountain West title game; Wahine volleyball hosts NCAA subregional; basketball teams face road challenges

By Brian McInnis on December 2, 2019

December is often when things calm down a bit in the realm of collegiate athletics in the wake of typically busy Novembers. Not this week for Hawaii, and not for the Rainbow Forecast. Between the football team heading up to Boise for its first Mountain West championship game, the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team hosting an NCAA subregional for the first time since 2013, and both UH basketball teams heading on the road for stiff challenges against ranked teams … big […]

Hawaii basketball: Rainbow Wahine earn signature win over Texas; Warriors grind past Hawaii Pacific

By Brian McInnis on December 1, 2019

Going into Sunday, the last time the Hawaii women’s basketball team beat a Power Five team was two years ago, at Arizona. There was a span of five missed opportunities against Power Fives since then, including Saturday’s close loss to No. 12 North Carolina State. The last win over a Power Five team at home? You have to go back a bit further, to exactly six years ago, Dec. 1, 2013, for a 77-71 overtime defeat of Minnesota, in which […]

Hawaii basketball: Rainbow Warriors play ‘Fabulous’ in defeat of San Francisco

By Brian McInnis on November 30, 2019

The Hawaii men’s basketball team made it a season-long emphasis to honor its past — more so than usual, being that it was the 100th season of Rainbow Warrior hoops. While every home game to this point has had an honorary captain from the past (including some very recent players), Friday night’s game against San Francisco was special in that regard. Four members of the “Fabulous Five” — John Penebacker, Bob Nash, Dwight Holiday and Jerome Freeman — plus three other players on […]

Basketball live: Hawaii vs. San Francisco

By Stephen Tsai on November 29, 2019

FINAL: Hawaii uses a late 14-1 run and Drew Buggs’ career-high 25 points to beat previously unbeaten San Francisco, 85-75. UH improves to 5-2. It’s 58-all after Jordan Raitanen came off a screen and swished a 3 from the top of the key. The Dons had zipped off six points in a row when UH point guard Drew Buggs was on the bench. But a technical against the Dons for flopping and Zigmars Raimo’s free throw boosted UH. * * […]
