Hawaii women’s tennis: Remembering the late, great Joy Minaai

By Dave Reardon on June 16, 2019

Celebration of Life services for Joy Minaai, who starred in tennis at the University of Hawaii and in 1983 won the Bonham Award for all-around excellence as a student-athlete and sportsmanship and community service, are set for July 6 at New Hope Chapel at Sand Island. Minaai, 57, passed away peacefully at her Makiki home recently after a long illness. Minaai, who was 5 feet 3, did not hit the ball hard, but for most of her Rainbow Wahine career […]

Quick Reads: Dick Couch’s words were as witty and powerful as his heart was warm

By Dave Reardon on May 24, 2019

Dick Couch, the legendary retired Star-Bulletin sportswriter who died Thursday at age 83, was employed by two newspapers during his journalism career that spanned more than 40 years. After college at Illinois and a hitch in the Army he started out at the Daily Mirror in his hometown of New York. For several years in the 1960s he didn’t get his paycheck from a paper. But he wrote for hundreds of them — all of them that depended on the […]

Dick Tomey was a coach, and not just of football players

By Dave Reardon on May 11, 2019

Back when I was a teen and allowed to be a fan out of sheer loyalty, or whatever other reason I wanted, Dick Tomey, who passed away last night, was my coach. He was not my coach as in playing for him, of course, but as in me rooting for his team. Same with Les Murakami and Dave Shoji. The teams they coached at the University of Hawaii when I was in high school here, and then later when I […]

Hawaii softball: Bob Coolen still enjoying a grand old time

By Dave Reardon on April 16, 2019

Coach Bob Coolen says he doesn’t want Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium named after him. “Just put a seat up there for me,” Coolen said with a laugh on Tuesday, talking to reporters before his University of Hawaii team took off for a three-game road set at Cal State Fullerton starting Friday. Coolen is focused on what is ahead, but still happy to talk about his 1,000th victory as the Hawaii coach on Saturday. The Wahine are riding high with a […]

Quick Reads: Evan Shirley, Wilbert Haslip will be missed

By Dave Reardon on April 7, 2019

Evan Shirley was always front-and-center. Until recently, Shirley, who died March 27 at age 73, was a fixture at University of Hawaii athletic events. He was very noticeable at the Stan Sheriff Center. Shirley always sat a few rows behind the scorer’s table, right at center court. “Evan was a great fan and a kind man,” UH athletic director David Matlin said. “I remember him back from my ticket office days when he had season tickets for several sports. I […]

Quick Reads: Outtakes from beyond the arc

By Dave Reardon on March 11, 2019

Here are some quotes that didn’t make it into Sunday’s story about the 3-point shot. If you haven’t had a chance yet, also read the excellent pieces by Brian McInnis and Paul Honda. ERAN GANOT, University of Hawaii men’s coach: DR: Any thoughts on why there’s been an explosion overall in 3-point shots taken in pros and college only recent years? EG: Shot distribution, shot selection is so key. It’s added another element. But this has been coming on … […]

Yes, Virginia, there is a book about your loss to Chaminade

By Dave Reardon on March 3, 2019

Jack Danilewicz’s byline is likely familiar to you if you read the sports pages of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin in the 1990s and early 2000s. In recent years, his stories about high school sports have also appeared on Midweek’s web site. I was spurred to give him a call by his mother and stepfather, Lynn and Len Scaduto. They approached me with great news after a recent University of Hawaii basketball game: Danilewicz had finally found a publisher for a book […]

Some in-the-stands perspective

By Dave Reardon on January 28, 2019

Each basketball season I make a point of watching at least one University of Hawaii game from the stands instead of courtside at the Stan Sheriff Center. It’s not just a ploy to try to get a free trim via the who-needs-a-haircut promotion, or, when the blimp makes its bombing run, coupons for those mystery meat fast-food tacos I really like. No, I like to remind myself what it was like watching these games before it became a job. Usually […]
