Bailey: “Why not Hawaii?”

By Dave Reardon on July 27, 2015

I’m back from vacation today. First thing will be to go hear Hawaii athletic director David Matlin and football offensive coordinator Don Bailey talk at the Downtown Athletic Club’s luncheon at the Hukilau restaurant. Update: About 100 people attended the luncheon. Matlin, who pointed out that he just made three months officially on the job, shared 10 principles of athletic administration in a short speech. He received a $30,000 check from Kurt Osaki, representing the We Get ‘Em grassroots campaign […]

Apisa finishing documentary

By Dave Reardon on July 14, 2015

Bob Apisa, one of the greatest high school football players in Hawaii’s history, recently returned home to celebrate his 70th birthday. The Farrington and Michigan State standout lives in Southern California after retiring from a career as a stuntman and actor in Hollywood. Now he has graduated to filmmaking, and is putting the finishing touches on a documentary, “Men of Sparta.” The film will document the 1966 Michigan State championship team in the context of the civil rights movement. One […]

I’m on vacation most of the rest of the month. But I will be back in for a day or two in the next couple of weeks and will post my ballot for preseason Mountain West football all-conference choices.

HNN refills sports reporting team

By Dave Reardon on June 22, 2015

Collin Harmon, who has worked in Denver, Montana and most recently Eugene, Oregon, at KVAL will join the Hawaii News Now sports department, according to sources. Harmon fills the spot opened when Mark Carpenter left earlier this month. The Phoenix native joins Francesca Weems and Taryn Hatcher on the HNN sports desk. I don’t know Harmon’s arrival date, but figure it must be sometime before Sept. 3. That’s when his alma mater, Colorado, and Hawaii open their football seasons at […]

Carpenter nailed it — and developed his own voice, too

By Dave Reardon on June 10, 2015

It is debatable when Mark Carpenter‘s broadcast career started. We can say it was four years ago, when he made the most of a Society of Professional Journalists internship at Hawaii News Now as a senior at Hawaii Pacific University. But I like to go further back, to when Mark was 16 and a student at Kamehameha, when he made his radio debut. The best part of the story is that he did it as “June Jones.” Mark called in […]

Clay comments on fellow decathlete and friend Jenner

By Dave Reardon on June 3, 2015

While working on today’s column yesterday, I reached out to Bryan Clay. I wanted to ask the 2008 Olympic decathlon champion who is a product of Castle High School his thoughts about Caitlyn (formerly Bruce) Jenner, who like Clay won the decathlon gold for the U.S. Jenner did it in 1976. Clay and Jenner have made public appearances together in the past. Clay responded by text after deadline last night. Here’s his comment: “I am friends with Bruce and stayed […]
