AP college football poll, week 3: Rebel Yell

By Dave Reardon on September 20, 2015

Did it benefit from five opponent turnovers? Did it score on a lucky play that looked like something from a movie? Yes, and yes. Regardless, Ole Miss emerged from Tuscaloosa with a 43-37 win over Alabama on Saturday. Combine that with outscoring their first two opponents 149-24, and the Rebels have the best resume after three weeks of the college football season. That’s why I’m among the 11 who voted them No. 1 this week. Ohio State was sloppy for […]

Stop the ridiculous midnight prep football, especially on school nights

By Dave Reardon on September 18, 2015

A high school football game started at 8:38 p.m. on Thursday. It ended right around midnight. It’s bad enough when a game goes that late on a weekend night. It is simply unacceptable on a school night. The game was at Aloha Stadium, and the students on the Farrington and Mililani football teams probably didn’t get to sleep before 2 a.m. That’s not conducive to a productive next day at school. No high school students should be at a school-sanctioned […]

Uncovered

By Dave Reardon on September 1, 2015

Some NFL fans already know the name Bennet Omalu and its significance relating to football. Many don’t. Soon, many more will. All should. Omalu is the Nigerian doctor who discovered chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) while conducting the autopsy of Pittsburgh Steelers great Mike Webster. It was a landmark scientific finding, linking head trauma associated in football to serious brain damage leading to illnesses and death. On Monday, a trailer for a film to be released starring Will Smith as Omalu […]

Where does West Oahu Little League win rank among greatest Hawaii sports moments?

By Dave Reardon on August 28, 2015

Now that we’ve had 10 years to reflect that’s a fun question to ponder. Where would you rate it compared to Hawaii making it to the Sugar Bowl, UH getting to the finals of the College World Series, the home run by Jenna Rodriguez to propel the Wahine into the softball CWS? There are many others, like Bryan Clay winning the decathlon gold, UH volleyball’s national championships, and Marcus Mariota winning the Heisman Trophy. In my opinion, the state’s first […]

More HNN sports transition

By Dave Reardon on August 15, 2015

Hawaii News Now bucked the trend recently by upping its sports staff to three anchors/reporters. Now, at least for the time being, HNN has four anchors and reporters covering the games people play in the islands Ian Scheuring has moved from Sunrise producer to sports reporter and weekend sports anchor at Hawaii News Now, as of Friday, Scheuring said on social media today. Francesca Weems and Taryn Hatcher are off the anchor desk now and reporting in the field. Both […]

Everett, ESPN agree to long-term deal

By Dave Reardon on August 5, 2015

While some of the other top-level talent is leaving ESPN, Neil Everett is set for at least another six years. Everett, who considers Hawaii as much home as his native Oregon, agreed to a new contract recently. So did his partner at SportsCenter LA, Stan Verrett. Financial terms were not disclosed, but it is believed Everett received a very significant raise. “It all started in Hawaii,” said Everett, who started as a sports information director at Hawaii Pacific University in […]
