By Dave Reardon on January 10, 2016

Marcus Mariota, the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner from Honolulu and Saint Louis School, will appear at the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame Celebration Dinner on Jan. 29 at the Hawaii Convention Center. Mariota, the former Oregon star who just completed his rookie season as the Tennessee Titans starting quarterback, will present the Polynesian College Player of the Year Award he won last year to Notre Dame offensive lineman Ronnie Stanley, this year’s recipient. The Hall’s inductee class of 2016 will […]

Chow’s career change

By Dave Reardon on January 4, 2016

If you haven’t seen it yet, you probably will soon. The other day while I was watching college football on TV, I was surprised to see former Hawaii coach Norm Chow show up on a commercial. And it’s hilarious. Intentionally hilarious. In it, Chow thanks ALTRES Staffing for helping him to “job search smarter, not harder,” and get back on his feet after being fired by the University of Hawaii. “Because of them I found a better fitting job,” Chow […]

Missed Opportunity

By Dave Reardon on January 3, 2016

A scheduling anomaly had the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team playing at 8 p.m. on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center, after the men played at 5:30 p.m. The men routed Howard 94-59 in front of a crowd announced at 4,288, which was invited to stay at no additional cost to watch the Wahine game. Around 2,500 or so remained for the tip-off against Penn, and this was a chance for the Wahine to increase their fan base. […]

Heisman hindsight

By Dave Reardon on January 1, 2016

Maybe the craziest thing about Christian McCaffrey’s 368-yard all-purpose yardage performance as Stanford beat Iowa 45-16 in the Rose Bowl today was that it wasn’t even his best game. The Stanford sophomore piled up 461 yards to lead the Cardinal over USC 41-22 in the Pac-12 championship game on Dec. 5. I thought that might be enough to get him the Heisman Trophy, especially since the voting was done that night. But, as you might know, Alabama running back Derrick […]

Bad News ‘Bows prevail with defense, unity, maturity

By Dave Reardon on December 22, 2015

Sanctions, schmanctions. Anyone who watched this team last year put negative off-court news and drama aside and just play winning basketball is not surprised Hawaii handled giant killer Northern Iowa 68-52 on Tuesday in the first round of the Diamond Head Classic. Remember, the core of this group lost its head coach just days before the start of last season and went out and won 22 games anyway. First-year head coach Eran Ganot said he could tell as the day […]

NCAA levies 1 year of no postseason for UH men’s hoops

By Dave Reardon on December 22, 2015

It could have been worse, but today’s announcement of sanctions by the NCAA against the University of Hawaii men’s basketball program is definitely not a good thing. The most significant difference from UH’s self-imposed sanctions is that the Rainbow Warriors will have a one-year ban from postseason play (2016-17) as part of three years of probation. But, with UH playing on national TV tonight in the Diamond Head Classic, lots of people — including potential recruits — will be hearing […]

Kiprotich, Chepkirui win Honolulu Marathon

By Dave Reardon on December 13, 2015

Kenyans ruled the day at the Honolulu Marathon today, winning both the men’s and women’s races with personal-best times. Felix Kiprotich of Kenya won the men’s race with a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes and 43 seconds. Kipchirchir broke away from a pack of six men out front late in the 26.2-mile race. Kiprotich’s time is the second-fastest in the event’s 43-year history. Defending champion Wilson Chebet finished second in 2:12:46. The six leaders were within two seconds of […]

Scott Harding as grad assistant? Sounds good

By Dave Reardon on December 2, 2015

Scott Harding graduates from the University of Hawaii with a business degree in two weeks. If you follow UH football at all, you know Harding is one of the most versatile players in the program’s history. Harding has expressed interest in becoming a graduate assistant coach as he begins work on a master’s degree. There are quite a few good reasons why Harding could be a valuable member of the UH staff. *Rigoberto Sanchez is an excellent punter, but perhaps […]
