Rolo says Stutz for Hill “worked out better for us”

By Dave Reardon on March 28, 2016

When new Hawaii football coach Nick Rolovich announced his staff it was a surprise to many that Craig Stutzmann was not a part of it. When offensive coordinator Zak Hill left for Boise State a week before recruiting letter of intent day after just a couple of months on the job, Rolovich knew exactly who he wanted. Rolovich raves about the job Stutzmann — his favorite target for passes when he quarterbacked UH in 2001 — has done as passing […]

UH has no monopoly on bad timing

By Dave Reardon on March 14, 2016

When University of Hawaii basketball coach Gib Arnold was fired a few days before the start of the 2014-15 season, many complained about the timing. Same when the NCAA announced sanctions stemming from its investigation of UH on the first day of the Diamond Head Classic last December. Cal is suffering today from similar bad timing, as the school announced it is moving toward terminating assistant coach Yann Hufnagel for sexual harassment allegations four days before meeting UH in the […]

There are reasons no one has done it

By Dave Reardon on March 10, 2016

At 5-feet-9, Nate Robinson is an NBA survivor and a talented, tough athlete. He was a decent college cornerback at Washington while playing both football and basketball for a year, but the odds are very much against him in this venture of trying to make an NFL team. With a few rare exceptions, corners have lost the quickness to cover NFL receivers by age 31. Some who have spent the last 10 years playing in the NFL pick up enough […]

Goodell unhappy with Pro Bowl again

By Dave Reardon on February 5, 2016

If it seems we’ve been down this road before it’s because we have. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters today assembled for Sunday’s Super Bowl that he is “disappointed” with what he saw in last Sunday’s Pro Bowl and that he is “open to new ideas” about how the league will “celebrate our great players” in the future. Whether that means scrapping the game itself remains to be seen, but Goodell sounded clear in his desire that if there is […]

Yes you can go home, Poly Hall, flag football

By Dave Reardon on January 30, 2016

I get a lot of resistance from some corners when I say guys who are from here should be given preference for coaching and other jobs. The reaction is often something like, “You need to get the best person for the job.” Well, I agree with that. The thing is, the best person for the job is often someone who knows what to expect here in Hawaii, who has a support network here, who’s heart is truly in it because […]

Report: Hawaii’s new OC hired by Boise State

By Dave Reardon on January 27, 2016

I’ve never known Chadd Cripe of the Idaho Statesman to get a story wrong. So, unless I hear something to the contrary, this is true, and Zak Hill is leaving the University of Hawaii football coaching staff and headed for Boise State without having coached a down as UH’s offensive coordinator. We don’t know how much of a loss this is for UH, but it surely isn’t a good thing not to have an offensive coordinator as recruiting winds down, […]

Iyomasa was an unsung hero

By Dave Reardon on January 12, 2016

Saddened to hear of the passing of Aaron Iyomasa, one of the unsung heroes on the local sports and broadcast scene. He had a major hand in the production of UH sports telecasts for decades. A great professional, and a witty and caring guy leaving us way too soon. I would normally only get a chance to talk with Aaron once in awhile because we’d both usually be busy doing our thing at work. But when we did, he was […]
